  • Modernica Shell Arm Chair - Rolling Base
    shophorne.com
The Case Study Fiberglass Rolling Chair is the classic office chair of choice. Modernica updated the vintage 4-star aluminum rolling base, with a contract-approved five-star base. The new five-star base surpasses the original design with an added weight-adjustable, tilt-control feature, which locks your chosen position in place. Also added is a fun to use, gas-lift height adjustment lever, for superfast height adjustments. The height is adjustable up to six-inches and the chair is easily tilted forward or back. The base rotates smoothly 360-degrees. Suitable for any corporate or home office space, this base has a five-year normal-wear guarantee. Easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century. The Fiberglass Shell Chairs were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. At the time, no one could possibly have anticipated the massive success and longevity of this iconoclastic design. In the early fifties, fiberglass was considered an ultra-high tech material. Produced with a mixture of resin and glass fibers, it was lightweight, yet heavy-duty. Initial development and production was through Zenith Plastics—early pioneers of developing fiberglass for household and military applications. As for the chair bases, they were cleverly designed to provide a number of leg options that would be interchangeable within and between the arm shell and the side shell. The shell chairs were first available in the spring of 1950. The first runs of the chairs were produced in only three colors; griege, elephant-hide gray, and parchment—all of which had interesting translucent qualities. The chairs were distributed until 1983. In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in our Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Our historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations. Choose from a wide range of shell colors and chair base options. Modernica offers the flexibility to build a chair to suit your individual style and needs. Please note that due to the nature of fiberglass, some "hairs" may vary in darkness and color due to the singeing/burning process used to create the seat. These fibers add to the uniqueness of each chair. Handcrafted in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

Lancaster is the first chair by Emeco which consists of different components. Michael Young designed the chair in 2009; it became part of a collection of chairs, tables and stools meanwhile. Handmade, warm wood and technically cool aluminium are connected to an exceptional combination in the Lancaster chair. The exciting material contrast isn’t disturbed by the formally simple design of the Lancaster. The production of the Emeco Lancaster consists of a lot of experience: The ash wood of the chair is processed in Pennsylvania in traditional local Amish-craftsmen, while Emeco is responsible for the aluminium components – of course also processed with handwork. The Lancaste chair by Emeco is also available with a frame out of dark ash wood as well as with a dark grey seat and backrest. More chairs out of the Emeco Lancaster collection (such as counter stool or barstools) are also available on demand.

The US-American manufacturer Emeco produces the chair in an usual quality. The Hudson Chair design emerged in the year 2000. Shortly before that, Emeco began a tight cooperation with the designer Philippe Starck, this one designed several products for the American company. Including the Hudson Chair, this was designed initially for the Hudson Hotel in New York. Hudson Chair is a neutral version of the classic Navy Chair from Emeco. Philippe Starck shaped the design compact, pure and reduced, and in absolute harmony with the Emeco Company spirit. Because of its simple and beautiful design, the Hudson Chair was honoured with the Good Design Award in the year 2000 becoming part of the constant collection of the Modern Art Museum in New York one year later. As well as with its other products, Emeco puts emphasis on high quality handwork with the Hudson Chair. Several trained employees need many working hours to produce only one Hudson aluminium Chair. This has the consequence that the chair not only is high class processed, durable and robust but every specimen becomes to be unique. The Navy Chair with the number 1006 is a classic from the Emeco house. The timeless aluminium chair is handmade, like every Emeco product, becoming a high quality individual Navy Chair. Emeco ’s Navy Chair was already produced in the year 1944 in cooperation with the aluminium manufacturer ALCOA for military reasons for America. It should habe been used at the Navy initially, that is the reason for its name. The result convinced then and today because of its low weight, stability and durability. Still today the chair is manufactured by costly handwork from aluminium. Several trained employees need 77 working steps and about 4 working hours to produce only one Navy Chair. This has for consequence that the chair not only is high quality processed, durable and robust, but also that every specimen becomes a unique designer piece. The Navy Chair 1006 by Emeco is also available in further colours - for example with armrests or as children's chair and counter chair.

The new designs re-imagine the classic, all aluminium Emeco 1006 Navy Chair, but adds comfort and color with new features including soft polyurethane upholstery, a wider seat. The cushions are given a sophisticated touch through the use of buttons and decorative stitching so they are not waterproof but the beauty is still undeniable. The cushions are available in either a weather durable Sunbrella fabric or in imitation leather with loose patches sewn together by hand and buttons added along the seams. The leather cushions are for indoor use only. The series has an armchair, lounge chair, sofa, and cocktail tables in 2 sizes as well as 3 sizes of a dining table. As with all teak furniture, to maintain the original luster the teak requires to be oiled once or twice a year. If left untreated the wood will develop a silvery gray patina which is equally beautiful.

  • Stephen Kenn Parallel Leather Armchair - Black Leather & Polished Nickel
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Ultra soft black calfskin cushion covers, black cotton webbing and leather belts interwoven atop a polished nickel frame. Made in Los Angeles, the collection is inspired by the characteristic principles of Soviet Modernism and bold interpretations of Brutalist Architecture through the simplification of form, receptive angular geometries and functional design.
