  • Oscar Armchair by Matthew Hilton
    shophorne.com
The Oscar armchair strikes a pleasing balance between modernity and tradition, large in size yet light in appearance. The armchair is made from a European hardwood frame, jute webbing and hessian straps and then covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibers, animal hair and wool. It features large feather cushions that are notable for their depth, the back has a line of sewn in pulls, lending the armchair the appearance of a buttoned back, without the actual buttons. The feet are made from walnut stained beech, with the front two being turned versions. By contrasting long straight lines with delicate natural curves, Mathew Hilton has created a piece that is both reserved and full of humility. The Oscar armchair is a piece perfect for those who like their modernity laced with a little familiarity. Made in the UK. Shown here in Molly 160 Wool and Range Leather. Additional fabrics available upon request.
  • Artek Armchair 42 - Alvar Aalto
    shophorne.com
Armchair 42 was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1932. An armchair without straight lines, the frame is made from laminated birch and is formed to produce a unique cantilevered shape. The seat and back are molded from a single sheet of plywood that is finished in a high-shine lacquer. The fluidity of this design creates a soft, comfortable place to sit using traditionally rigid materials. The rigidity of the materials is softened to create a fluidity that is both inviting and comfortable. The Armchair 42 is available with a black lacquered seat or white lacquered seat.

As part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art, the Paimio Chair is an icon in furniture design. • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs - Leather
    dwr.com
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified¿ for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

  • Jaime Hayon Ro Lounge Chair
    dwr.com
Spanish designer Jaime Hayon immersed himself as a teenager in both skateboard culture and graffiti art, which lie at the core of the bold and whimsical forms that he creates today. In 1997, after studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris, he joined Fabrica, a research center in Treviso, Italy, where he soon became the head of design. Hayon struck out on his own in 2003, first devising collections of ceramics and furniture, then delving into interior design. His work is featured in several museums and has received accolades from the likes of Time and Wallpaper magazines. Hayon designed his Ro Lounge Chair (2013) to offer relief from frenetic everyday life. “My goal was to create a slim and elegant chair that encourages reflection and comfort,” he explains. Appropriately named – ro is Danish for “tranquility” – this sculptural chair beckons you to relax, offering chair-and-a-half proportions beautifully suited to changing positions, reading a newspaper or having your dog sitting next to you as you unwind. Upholstered with a tufted back and flared outer shell, it’s marked by subtle textural contrast and flowing organic lines. This is the authentic Ro Lounge Chair produced by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland.

  • Mater Shell Lounge Chair - Black Leather, Soaped Oak
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair is developed out of Michael Dreebens ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in North India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it's waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs attempt to incentivize this skilled trade by providing these artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is an homage to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it's clean of line and is intended to emphasize the leather forming and stitching, it's deeply comfortable, and it's durable – like the saddles it's derived from, it's crafted from thick, top-grain leather, and with reasonable care, will last for decades. Frame: Soaped Oak. Leather: Black leather.

  • Michael Thonet Era Armchair with Upholstered Seat
    dwr.com
Defined by its dependable bentwood construction and simple organic form, the graceful, lightweight and surprisingly strong Era Collection (1859) has been in continuous production for more than 150 years. By making the chair back and rear legs from a single piece of curved wood, designer Michael Thonet, who perfected the bentwood process for chair-making, eliminated the need for expensive and time-consuming hand-carved joints. Swiss architect Le Corbusier used the Era Chair in his buildings, stating, “This chair, whose millions of representatives are used on the Continent and in the two Americas, possesses nobility.” Other fans of this iconic form included Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom featured this chair in their paintings. As with any natural material, slight variations in the texture and color of the wood are to be expected and are not defects. Made in the Czech Republic at a factory that’s been making chairs for more than a century.
