"Steve, wait." He froze. Instantly. Without thought, other than to do anything that might make this perfect angel happy. He shut his eyes tightly, trying to block out the sound of her shoes tapping timidly closer to him. This wasn't real. It couldn't be. But he was so tired of being alone. So tired of having no one around. So he simply stood as she placed one of her tiny, delicate hands on his cheek. "Please don't leave me." His eyes flew open in alarm at the sound of her whispered words, her voice cracking from...judging by her face, heartbreak. Her beautiful emerald eyes were crystal clear, shining with tears, and as he watched, one diamond tear escaped from her eye. He raised his own hand to her face and gently wiped it away with his thumb. Her eyes fluttered closed at the contact, releasing more tears and a shuddering sigh. Steve couldn't hold back anymore, the longing inside him had become too strong. He reached out to her downright tiny frame and crushed her body to his, his arms cording against her back. She sighed again. They stood there with their arms locked about each other, lost in their private world that consisted only of each other. Steve hooked his arms under her legs and she automatically locked them around his waist, her arms going about his neck. He buried his face into her hair, and he grumbled out, "I will never leave you, Ava. So long as you want me, I will always be here for you. And even if you don't want me, I'll still watch over you. I love you." He said the last part so softly he didn't think she heard it. "I love you too, Steve." They simply held each other tighter, basking and reveling in each other. In that moment, Steve felt whole.
