  • The Pompom Rug 5'6 X 7'10 Remastered Vintage Handwoven Turkish Oushak Rug Decorative Overdyed Ar

    Size: 5'6' x 7'10' metric system: 167 cm x 240 cm stock code: nbc8516 the project: the aim is to show different visual layers on a single surface, in this case a vintage handwoven rug. To use the advantage of a 'medallion oriented' rug which has strength in creating a visual focal point, and to use the advantage of 'repeat pattern' rug which is to have a spacious feeling and looks bigger than it actually is. If the existing design on the rug is too strong, we try to use different natural materials for pompoms to counterbalance the visual strength of the base. Preparation of the base: we use several different weavings as a base for this project. They are all handwoven with handspun yarn in anatolia, turkey. We only use weavings which are woven before 1960s. Nothing new or machine made. Mostly the base is pre-1960s handwoven turkish oushak rug. Original. Woven with handspun natural wool. The rugs have been exposed to sun & rain for at least 3 months. By doing this, we mute the original colors by 10-40 percent and the weaker pile goes away. The remaining pile is strong and shiny wool with muted colors. After this process, we overdye the rug in open copper pots ( we do not use steam heated closed industrial pots) this is a very important detail because the pressure heated pots actually ruin the foundation of the rug, making the colors look dull and reduce the lifespan of the handwoven rug. (my father says the industrial pots make the rug look industrial.) the next process is laying the rugs in the field again (photos in the 'about' section of our etsy shop) in order to mute the overdyed color some more and get the 'bitterness' of the overdyed out of the tonality. The pompom: for making the pompoms, we select natural materials such as, wool, fine goat hair, silk, angora goat wool, organic cotton, and hemp. Most of the time, we gather these material from vintage weavings of anatolia, turkey. Technically what we call 'pompom' is a gordian knot. (double knot or 'gordes knot') we take the pile out from where the yarn is going to be knotted so the rug is perfectly leveled on the back and it doesn't feel bumpy. Afterwards, the yarn is knotted and necessary finishings are done so the pile feels soft and is integrated to the foundation of the rug. (my father says because some clients are fed up with overdyed rug look, we need to give the people a slightly different look. And and there is nothing wrong with a pompom) the result is a decorative rug which can orchestrate to interior in so many ways, making a vintage rug a powerful tool for an interior designer.   • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs - Leather

    The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair.
