Pure+Applied is a multidisciplinary design studio that specializes in exhibitions, exhibition graphics, interiors, street graphics, spatial graphics, wayfinding, catalogues, reports, books, websites, magazines, identities, illustration, performance, ephemera, and community-based projects and work.” Rather than apply a signature style, we develop an approach to each project based on the content and context of the material and on our assessment of the needs of our client. After clarifying client goals through face-to-face meetings, in-depth observations and self-initiated research, we start conceptualizing designs, establishing timelines, and exploring and presenting solutions. Client and user feedback enables us to develop and refine our ideas and specify requirements and materials. As our client relationships evolve, we learn their culture and can anticipate needs and preferences. Committed to projects that enrich and educate communities, we work primarily with nonprofits, cultural and civic institutions. Our clients, including curators, artists, architects and urban planners have strong aesthetic visions of their own, which we help to interpret in legible, engaging ways. Whether creating an identity, an exhibition, a publication, or a website, we devise integrated solutions that communicate ideas, all while sourcing sustainable materials.

This highly sought-after volume detailing one of the most influential magazines of the twentieth century is now back in print at a newly affordable price. In 1950, Fleur Cowles established what would become one of the most important and talked about magazines ever created. Critically lauded for its sharp mix of clothes, literature, art, travel, decor, theater, and humor, Flair made publishing history with its combination of eclectic editorial content and lavish production quality. Recalled as "the first magazine that became an art form," The Best of Flair is a compilation of the magazine’s best content as chosen by the woman who created it. Along with its distinctive production values, Flair also features interviews and contributions from some of the most noted artists and celebrities of the past fifty years, including Lucian Freud, Jean Cocteau, Tallulah Bankhead, Saul Steinberg, Salvador Dalí, Simone de Beauvoir, Walker Evans, James Michener, Ogden Nash, Gypsy Rose Lee, Clare Boothe Luce, George Bernard Shaw, John O’Hara, Margaret Mead, and Tennessee Williams. Now, more than ten years after this book was first published by Rizzoli, and more than fifty years after the magazine ceased publication, this facsimile edition offers the same ingenious bookmaking of its predecessor, including multiple gatefolds with die-cuts, booklets, and accordion folder leaflets. About the Author Fleur Cowles (1908–2009) was an American artist, editor, and writer best known for her pioneering and influential work at Flair. Dominick Dunne (1925–2009) was an American writer and investigative journalist best known for his contributions to Vanity Fair magazine as well as his true crime novels.

  • Paul Klee my art activity book
    More info
Swiss artist Paul Klee especially liked the style and characters he saw in children’s paintings. He once said he borrowed ideas for his own work from the way children used shapes, lines and colours to conjure up a new world on a sheet of paper. This fun and imaginative activity book borrows Klee’s ideas back, encouraging children to use their artistic instinct and get creative. Some of the drawings invite new characters, and introduce Klee’s own ones - the tightrope walker! the angry leopard! - as well as inspiring other ideas like tracing and cutting out, playing with and expanding Klee’s own artworks. Sparking endless possibilities, this activity book is an ideal and immersive introduction to an accessible modern artist. Anja Edelmann is a designer who has worked on a variety of artistic projects within the realms of theatre, museums, performance and film. In addition, she has developed and designed a number of art books for children on behalf of Nationalgalerie, Berlin, and runs art projects in cooperation with Berlin schools and museums.

    More info
New York - Autumn in the City — Today was an absolutely perfect autumn day in New York City. The air was crisp, and the sun exuded a cool warmth. This time of year always makes me incredibly nostalgic. It was the autumn of 2009 that I found my passion for photography. I would walk as far as my legs would take me with my little point and shoot camera which was severely limited in its capacity. I was too poor for a smartphone at the time and remember hoping that the no-frills point and shoot that I bought on sale for $79 could help me capture the city I love in photographs. I went through quite a few of those early photos today for a client who found one of the photos on my Flickr account and requested it for an upcoming ad campaign. I keep all of my work on my Flickr account, even the early work. It’s amazing how far some of those early photos have gone in terms of usage. Not all of my early work is what I would consider good. In fact, most of my early work is fairly rough in terms of execution of what I was attempting to do with the limited tools I had at the time. However, I keep them online because I believe it’s important to keep a record of where we have been in life. It helps to put everything in perspective. Most importantly, it helps to track growth and learning. I wanted to share a few of my photos from that magical autumn of 2009. I can still feel every aspect of each moment I captured with my camera when I look at these… The way the leaves gathered at the curb… Early Halloween decorations… Quiet moments where the past and present co-mingled… Horses and Central Park’s autumn foliage… As holiday scenes tugged at the heart… And glowing orange lights warmed up chilly afternoons.. Central Park’s landscapes in their last hurrah before winter… As the first intrepid ice-skaters took to the ice… While the Upper East Side’s architecture framed a perfect hint of orange… As townhouses… And grand architecture uptown stoically waited to hibernate… Brooklyn reveled in Autumn’s warmth… Modern love enjoyed a moment in an abandoned East Village lot… And New York City passionately declared its love for autumn. — Looking for these photos to view larger?
