  • Vitra Miniatures Collection: Eames® Plywood Elephant
    dwr.com
Charles and Ray Eames were fascinated by elephants. Many images of these gentle giants are found in Charles' photographic documentations of Indian culture and the circus world. The Eames Plywood Elephant (1945) is among the plywood pieces designed by the Eameses and one of the most difficult to produce. In the early 1940s, they successfully developed an innovative method for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which they used to produce a wide range of furniture and sculptural objects. To render the Elephant, tight angles and compound curves require a sophisticated mastery of plywood technology. It was so complicated that the full-size Plywood Elephant never went into production. Only two prototypes were made, both of which were displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in 1945 and 1946. Today only one known model remains in the possession of the Eames family. Vitra Design Museum has reproduced the Plywood Elephant at a scale of 1:6. True to the original pieces in structure and, the miniatures are precision-crafted, making them a thoughtful gift for a furniture lover or design professional. Each miniature comes handsomely packaged in a wood box with an informational booklet. Made in Poland.

  • Artek Aalto A331 Beehive ceiling lamp
    finnishdesignshop.com
The A331 ceiling lamp, known as Beehive, is one of Aalto's gems. For Alvar Aalto, lamps' design and architecture go together. Almost always Aalto's lamps are part of a larger architectural plan. On the other hand, in Aalto's lamps we can find the same principles as in his architecture. When planning rooms, a big attention was put on where windows had to be placed and on light illuminating the room. In the Beehive lamp we can clearly see a reference to this characteristic of Aalto's architecture. The lamp has a structure which allows the light to be diffused through the brass elements that join the aluminium sheets. Thanks to the brass, the light gets the right warm shade. It was very important for Aalto that the lamp's light is warm and that's why he used brass very much. Manufacturer: Artek. Design: Alvar Aalto. Size: Diameter 33 cm, height 30 cm. Material: Painted aluminium, polished brass rings. Color: White, brass, white cable. Light source: E27, 15W compact fluorescent or 75W incandescent. Mounting: Type of cable: White plastic cord. Cable length: 2,5 m. Canopy: Included. Light fixture plug: Included.

  • Vitra - Miniature Rood Blauwe Stoel
    connox.com
The “Rodblauwe stel” is considered a deciding key object of modern furniture design because of the consequence with which Rietveld understood a piece of furniture as an idealistic, abstract composition of surfaces and lines in a room. The kind of abstraction that has been adopted by Rietveld in here is comparable with the one of the painter Piet Mondrian. Mondrian belonged to a selection of artists and architects – so did Rietveld later on – that grouped around Theo van Doesburg and his magazine “The Stijl”, influenciatng the 20th century art sustainably with their radical formulations. Rietveld reduced a given reality to its linear and widely-spread basics. If Mondrian had a landscape as inspiring idol, Rietveld had the idea of a traditional, massive armchair that flew in a geometric construction. The original of the Rood Blauwe Stoel has been designed by Gerrit Rietveld in the year 1918 and it is produced today as a 1:1 model by Cassina since 1973. The here offered miniature by Vitra (scale 1:6) consists of lacquered wood.
