He began his career while a student at the Rhode Island School of Design. After garnering raves for a necklace he'd made his mother, he took jewelry samples to open buyer days at some of New York's finest department stores, and soon a burgeoning business was born. At the age of 23, Strongwater met designer Oscar de la Renta, with whom he began to collaborate on jewelry designs for runway shows. The move to home accessories was delightfully serendipitous organic. For the 1994 holiday season, Strongwater sent gifts of jewel-encrusted filigree picture frames to friends, fashion editors, and buyers, who immediately fell in love with the design. By 1998, his Jewels for the Home collection had supplanted his fashion business. In essence, Strongwater created his own niche: the jeweler turning his meticulous eye and art toward a world beyond a woman's wrists, neck, and ears.

  • Eclectica 1950s Trifari Feathered Crescent Brooch, Gold
    johnlewis.com
A chic brooch dating from the 1950s, featuring a gold-plated crescent design finished off with feathered edges. One of the biggest names in vintage jewellery, the company was founded by Gustavo Trifari and Leo Kraussman in 1918, who were joined in 1925 by Carl Fishel. Gustavo Trifari came from a family of fine jewellers, but it was the mix of skills from all of the business partners that made Trifari such an unusually successful business. In 1930 the team was bolstered by Alfred Philippe, who had worked at Cartier and went on to become Trifari's head designer. Trifari were extremely technically innovative in the materials they used, and also protective of their styles and designs. One of the distinguishing business decisions for Trifari was made in 1937, when the company began using the Trifari name as their trademark on every piece of jewellery they produced. This set a precedent still followed to this day, but at the time created a strong sense of brand image and confidence, and also helped to protect their designs from being copied by other studios. One of Trifari's cases against a copied design drove the change from the use of patents to copyright protection in the jewellery industry. After 1955 Trifari pieces were stamped with the copyright symbol. Trifari went on to be purchased by Crystal Brands and has since changed hands again, but its most covetable and collectible pieces were created in the heyday of the 1950s and 1960s.
