Design Charles & Ray Eames, 1948. Molded fiberglass, metal frame. Made by Herman Miller® "The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests." -Charles Eames. Thanks to a new proprietary process of producing fiberglass, Herman Miller is once again able to produce the Eames original 1950's Molded Fiberglass Chair safely by means of a less volatile, monomer-free "dry bind" process. Like the original shell chairs, the new fiberglass finish has the same covetable surface variation and tell-tale fiberglass striation that have attracted avid vintage collectors for decades. Available in both the arm and side chair formats in eight archival colors, the chairs can be configured with a choice of wire, dowel leg, stacking, rocker, and 4-leg bases. An array of trim, finely tailored Hopsak fabrics designed by Alexander Girard, Herman Miller's Textile Director from 1952 to 1973, round out the collection of shell customization options, fully restoring the integrity of the original 1953 shell chair offerings. All chairs can be recycled through the Herman Miller Take Back Program. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." With the molded plastic, fiberglass, and wood shell chairs -as well as the wire chair- the Eames' have created a universal response to what everyone wants from a chair: a simple, gracious form that fits any body and every place. 25" W | 24" d | 31.5" h | seat: 18" h.

  • Kartell Joe Colombo 4801 Armchair
    hivemodern.com
Design Joe Colombo. Transparent or batch-dyed PMMA. Made in Italy by Kartell. For the first time in its 60-year history, Kartell will pay homage to one of the most iconic - and perhaps uncharacteristic - pieces in its archive with the reissue of Joe Colombo's 4801 Armchair. Originally designed by the Italian master in 1965, the 4801 chair is famous for being the only Kartell piece ever to be made entirely of wood. Now, nearly fifty years later, Kartell has developed the complex and technically challenging engineering methods necessary to produce the design as originally envisioned, in its signature plastic. An authentic symbol of design in the '60s, the highly sought-after 4801 chair is revered by private collectors and institutions alike, and has been displayed internationally at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The second generation of the 4801 chair is to be available in a numbered series beginning in February 2012, captures the curving sinuous lines and exact proportions of Colombo's design, now in sleek transparent or white and black plastic (PMMA). Joe Colombo, in his design utopia, gathered many of the common hopes of the 60's in Italy and Europe but was never slave to ideological bounds. His extremely fast escalation in becoming an internationally known designer brought him three medals at the XIII Triennale in Milan, the 1967 Compasso d'Oro award and creations which are included in permanent collections around the world. 24.4" W | 25.2" d | 27.2" h | seat: 9.8" h.

Design Warren Platner, 1962. Steel wire rod, upholstery. Made in Italy by Knoll. In the 1960's, Warren Platner transformed steel wire into a sculptural furniture collection, creating what is now considered a design icon of the modern era. The Platner collection's unique harmonious forms are produced by welding steel wire rods to circular frames, producing a moire effect and capturing the decorative, gentle, graceful quality that Platner sought to achieve. The hand crafted Easy Chair, a popular sculptural icon paring geometry and color, is the epitome of curvy comfort; it is available with or without the Ottoman, which can also be used independently. Warren Platner's collection of seating and tables using nickel-plated bent wire as a structural and decorative element has captivated furniture enthusiasts worldwide. The Easy Chair offers a generous seat and a high back, enveloping the sitter in comfort. The Platner collection also includes a side chair, low stool plus dining, side and coffee tables. • Bubble Club Armchair By Kartell
    2modern.com
A veritable icon made by Kartell, the mass-tinted polypropylene Bubble Club Armchair was a pioneer of a new concept in furniture accessories: the industrial chair made entirely of plastic. Technology and research made it possible for Kartell to mass produce what was traditionally handmade. Bubble Club is a roomy armchair, characterized by the soft line of its armrests, in contrast with the more rational lines of the backrest. This is a minimalist silhouette, reminiscent of the lines of "granny's sofa." Along with the couch and the small table, produced with the same finish and colors, Bubble Club Armchair is now a complete family, nothing less than an "industrial living-room." Thanks to their exceptional weather resistance, all three members of the Bubble Club family can survive perfectly outdoors and are ideal for furnishing gardens, pool sides and patios.
  • Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec Steelwood Chair
    luminaire.com
A radical assemblage of two traditional materials, steel and wood, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec's Steelwood chair is indicative of the brother's characteristic approachable, modern designs. With it's design influenced by the typical form of the archetypal plastic chair, the designer's production method, construction and finishing details are anything typical. Unlike the plastic chairs that influenced the design, Steelwood is designed for continued use over the years; as time goes on, the materials acquire a patina that add warmth and character. The chair is a product of experience, made by some of Italy's most skilled metalworkers. To follow the subtle shape of the metal piece, the stamping process required deep technological research. Designed for easy disassembly, the chair's two materials can be separated by undoing a few screws and recycled according to type.
