The first thing Sophia Amoruso sold online wasn’t fashion—it was a stolen book. She spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and dumpster diving. By twenty-two, Sophia had resigned herself to working a mediocre day job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was there that she decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay. Eight years later, she is the founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Nasty Gal. #GIRLBOSS includes Sophia’s story, yet is infinitely bigger than Sophia. {Image scanned from a borrowed library copy of French Riviera (Assouline).} The first day of summer deserves a sun soaked image plucked from pages of French Riviera (by Xavier Girard, published by Assouline). This image speaks of summer days to me. Not mine, but ones I'd like to imagine. (As I prepare to hit Publish Now on this post, the heavens are opening, the rain pouring, and the sky becoming increasingly grey, but I am sure we can, for sake of feel alone, play along with the idea.) So grab your favourite canine companion and come with me today to Copenhagen by way of A different picture with every look (Kjøbenhavn). I've grapes packed, and we can stop for a toasted sandwich along the way. This artists’ book is one of four recently exhibited as part of Louise and my Charms of the Gloaming, which after a 5-week-long display in the window of the Port Jackson Press Print Room is now but a pleasant memory. However, in saying that, it is one of four artists’ books and a collection of Louise’s drawings that we have left with the good folk of Port Jackson Press Print Room until they close for Christmas so if you live nearby and would like to see this work with your own eyes, you've still a chance. They also have a collection of our prints available for your perusal too. On the far wall, Louise’s Delias Hübner (Pieredae), Barn owl (Tyto alba), Zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), Giant hummingbird (Patagonia gigas), and Northern hawk-owl (Surnia ulula) are pinned, and on a shelf in the front window, our artists’ book, Beneath the screen of closed eyelids (Port-Said), and To spend a quiet day (Interlaken Berner Oberland), and With you my destiny I'd steal (Venezia). {A different picture with every look (Kjøbenhavn).} + I am December ready. I think. Here is to days that begin with a chocolate from the advent calendar, and the wonders of a new haircut. + Louise's recent post, It all comes down. + My Mum's project A Drawing a Day continues.

  • The Year That Was Top 2013 Fashion Trends Fashion Global
    neonblush.com
A blogger's 2013 best friend: the skort. As worn by Neon Blush Despite the number thirteen being considered an unlucky number for many, the year 2013 was a truly momentous year for the globe. In just 365 days an abundance of events took place that changed the world - the Royal family’s newborn, the Boston Marathon Bombings, the engagement of 'Kimye’ and the death of Nelson Mandela to name a few. Twenty-thirteen was a landmark year for all. Not only for the globe, but also the fashion world. Various fashion trends spread across the globe – some reasonably stylish, others borderline embarrassing… Let us take a look at twenty-thirteen’s top five fashion trends that brought out our inner fashionistas -and our wallets! How many are you guilty of? 1. The Skort Traditionally worn to provide women the freedom for sports, gardening and cleaning, nowadays, the skort has evolved into a fashion icon. Twenty-thirteen marked the sudden outburst of this trend with high fashion labels including Zara and Staple the Label releasing their own, along with well-known figures Olivia Palermo and Kendall Jenner strutting this latest craze. The simple yet classy appearance of a skirt gives us that elegant feel, whilst the hidden short allows us to move comfortably and prevent any unwanted humiliation – because let’s face it, there is nothing more humiliating than tripping in front of a work colleague and having your skirt slip up! Twenty-thirteen - the year that transformed what was once just a convenient outfit piece into a fashion necessity! 2. The Sneaker Growing into the fashion world, one ascertains certain tips and tricks as to what is socially acceptable. In my personal experience, I have learnt that the concept of sneans (the combination of sneakers and jeans) is a definite fashion no-no. However, twenty-thirteen hit and suddenly the disapproval of sneans had run out the window… literally. With celebrity icons including Miranda Kerr and Scott Disick witnessed victimising this fashion crime, the rest of the globe quickly caught on and partook in this alarming fashion transformation. No longer are sneakers worn strictly for the gym… What do you think, a cutting-edge trend or a fashion catastrophe? 3. The ‘Shirt-Around-the-Waist’ That’s right… twenty-thirteen took us back through time to a nineties flashback! The grungy trend that was oh-so-popular throughout the nineties hit the globe a second time with celebrities including Rihanna, Nicole Richie, and even the fashion conscious, Kanye West, flaunting this trend. The original plaid flannels were once again a huge hit – however this time denim jackets, gym gear, and woolen knits came into trend. Is it possible fashion history could repeat itself a third time? I certainly hope so… because I am guilty as charged! 4. The Onesie Who would’ve thought the attire of newborn would progress into a global phenomenon? I certainly didn’t, and yet here we are, the beginning of twenty-fourteen with grown men and women flaunting adult onesies… It was a repeat of the ‘planking’ fiasco – starting off as a small group of friends having a laugh, which rapidly ventured into a worldwide trend. The onesie trend quickly took off with brands including Peter Alexander releasing their very own onesie range. Although a tad embarrassing and a little childish, the ‘onesie’ trend undoubtedly gave us a few giggles for the year! 5. The Bralette Not so long ago was it frowned upon for a woman to expose her underclothing outside the bedroom. However, in the revolutionary year of twenty-thirteen, this attitude took a turn. Strutted down the runway, through the streets, and in mainstream clothing boutiques - twenty-thirteen was the year of the bralette. With oodles of different materials, patterns and styles, the bralette was a definite must-have for everyone! When styled correctly, the bralette looks elegant and sophisticated… Who said underclothing couldn’t be worn in public? What were your top trends for the year that was - and how will 2014 fare? In 1931, at 29, Jean Royère (1902-1981) resigned from a comfortable position in the import-export trade in order to set up business as an interior designer. He learned his new trade in the cabinetmaking workshops of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine in Paris. In 1934, he designed the new layout of the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs Elysées and found immediate success, embarking upon an international career that was to endure for nearly half a century. Royère tackled all kinds of decoration work and opened branches in the Near East and Latin America; among his patrons were King Farouk, King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran, who entrusted him with the interior design of their palaces. The Royère style is a wonderful amalgam of bright, cheery colors, subtly organic forms and precious materials. Compact and fluid, robust and delicate, Royère's chairs, lamps, chandeliers, sofas and desks exude a sensuous confidence, suggesting both comfort and alertness. This superbly produced, linen-bound, two-volume boxed monograph would have made Royère proud. The first volume explores the designer's work across four themes inspired by his creations: "The Vegetal Realm," "The Animal World," The Imaginative Realm" and "Line and Design." In addition to prefaces by Jacques Lacoste and Patrick Seguin, this volume contains interviews with Lorenz Baümer, Béatrice Salmon, and Christian Lacroix--by art historian and journalist Françoise Claire Prodhon--and a chapter looking back to the Jean Royère exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York in 2008. The second volume opens with a 1963 interview with Royère by Pascal Renous, and then presents the "Jean Royère Repertoire": 380 items of furniture and other creations accompanied by detailed references and illustrations of variants. The volume is rounded off by a sketchbook offering 156 hitherto unpublished Royère drawings. This authoritative and sumptuous publication is the last word on this mid century master. Hardcover. 656 pages.
