It is said that in 1973, while Oiva Toikka was in his study in Nuutajarvi Finland, a bird flew onto his window ledge. It was a rare bird, one he had not seen before in these parts and he began to sculpture it's image in glass. The bird amazingly came back day after day. Professor Toikka continued on to finish it's image in glass. The creation of the bird demanded great technical and artistic insight. He finished his work and just as strange as that particular bird being there, the bird disappeared and did not return. Professor Toikka has continued since then creating his birds, at least one a year since 1973. His birds are hand made and each one is unique featuring its own distinctive colour vatiations. His pieces are highly sought after as gifts and collector's pieces. Each bird is personally signed as proof of authenticity. The little town of Nuutajarvi has been a glass making village for over two hundred years.

Formerly of Studio/Louise Campbell, Scandinavian designer Thomas Bentzen established his own studio in 2010. Bentzen is a co-founder of the design collective Remove and has exhibited his products all over the world. Reflecting the designer’s origin in its quiet yet captivating form and subdued, the fully handmade Elevated Vase (2013) strives to capture the earthly and ethereal all at once. “The wood represents the roots in the soil and the glass the airy treetop, as it stands in nature,” says Bentzen of his vase. Elegant yet carefully understated, it manages to both anchor and lift arrangements without dominating the stage. “The wooden bowl holding the glass vase elevates the flowers, almost ritually,” he says, “and frames them in a new Nordic poetic way.” Glass portion removes for easy hand cleaning; not dishwasher safe. Belonging to her Edition Collection, this work stands as a continuation of Torfs' unique approach to glass. The Armadillo Coupe Vase is based on geometric shapes that have undergone intense manipulation. Sharp cuts are applied to create the dynamic, energetic piece, resulting in a minimalist, yet wonderfully sensual sculpture. All of her work is handmade in the Czech Republic and is infused with her wonder at how the techniques of glass blowing, cutting and sanding - which have hardly changed over the past 200 years - can lead to contemporary objects.
