  • Oscar Armchair by Matthew Hilton
    shophorne.com
The Oscar armchair strikes a pleasing balance between modernity and tradition, large in size yet light in appearance. The armchair is made from a European hardwood frame, jute webbing and hessian straps and then covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibers, animal hair and wool. It features large feather cushions that are notable for their depth, the back has a line of sewn in pulls, lending the armchair the appearance of a buttoned back, without the actual buttons. The feet are made from walnut stained beech, with the front two being turned versions. By contrasting long straight lines with delicate natural curves, Mathew Hilton has created a piece that is both reserved and full of humility. The Oscar armchair is a piece perfect for those who like their modernity laced with a little familiarity. Made in the UK. Shown here in Molly 160 Wool and Range Leather. Additional fabrics available upon request.

  • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs - Leather
    dwr.com
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified¿ for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

  • Modernica Shell Counter Side Chair - Dowel Swivel Base
    shophorne.com
The Case Study Fiberglass Dowel Counter Stool with swivel base is an essential for the modern home. Available in a myriad of colors, choose your wire-frame in either zinc-plated steel or black powder-coated steel, and finish your design by choosing either solid maple dowels or solid walnut dowels. Easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century. The Fiberglass Shell Chairs were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. At the time, no one could possibly have anticipated the massive success and longevity of this iconoclastic design. In the early fifties, fiberglass was considered an ultra-high tech material. Produced with a mixture of resin and glass fibers, it was lightweight, yet heavy-duty. Initial development and production was through Zenith Plastics—early pioneers of developing fiberglass for household and military applications. As for the chair bases, they were cleverly designed to provide a number of leg options that would be interchangeable within and between the arm shell and the side shell. The shell chairs were first available in the spring of 1950. The first runs of the chairs were produced in only three colors; griege, elephant-hide gray, and parchment—all of which had interesting translucent qualities. The chairs were distributed until 1983. In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in our Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Our historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations. Choose from a wide range of shell colors and chair base options. Modernica offers the flexibility to build a chair to suit your individual style and needs. Please note that due to the nature of fiberglass, some "hairs" may vary in darkness and color due to the singeing/burning process used to create the seat. These fibers add to the uniqueness of each chair. Handcrafted in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

Hans Wegner’s Ladderback Chair (1966), with its fine joinery and exquisite form, demonstrates the Danish modern innovator’s roots as a cabinetmaker. Shaker-inspired, it features visible joints between the foreleg and the armrest, which help make the chair extremely strong. The hand-woven paper cord seat provides a compelling material contrast to the solid oak frame on this intuitively ergonomic chair that can be used for reading or as a statement piece. A fine example of Wegner’s trademark organic functionalism, the Ladderback combines the warmth of natural wood with the clean, minimal lines of midcentury modernism. One of Wegner’s more than 400 chair creations, it has a timeless shape that hasn’t aged a bit since its conception in 1966. Made in Denmark.

Already admired by teachers, students and visitors of the Dessau Bauhaus, where it stood in a few houses of the “master town”. And already in 1926, the production beginning year, it was honored as “masterpiece” in the exposition of the Dresden arts hall. The first steel rod lounger B 3 from Marcel Breuer – later known as “Club Lounger” or “Wassily” – soon reached publicity and was part of the interests to the Bauhaus. Finally it should cause a worldwide boom for steel rod furniture that stood for avant-gardism and the break of industrial aesthetics into privacy. With the also new black-silver contrasts which also remind of valuable jewelry and modern machines, he created “magic of precision”, as a French critic wrote. Breuer saw “apparatus of today’s life” in his furniture. They should be weightless, open, affordable, demountable and hygienic. B 3, which has also been available as folding furniture and which has been built by Breuer in his leisure time together with a locksmith, fulfilled these criteria. Therewith he connected to designs of Gerrit Rietveld among others. Breuer didn’t create an everyday object with the Wassily Chair as he desired, but a new furniture type and an “abstract-real-sculpture” (Siegfried Geidion), in whose open geometry the minimalism of new form-finders is displayed. It became a real design icon, a central symbol of modern times and not for nothing the first furniture piece that became a classic in the 60es. By the way: Numerous myths are told around the name giving of the Wassily chair. Some say that it got its name because Wassily Kandinsky was the roommate of Marcel Breuer in the Bauhaus. Others say it only has the name because the chair was a design for Wassily Kandisky’s apartment at the Bauhaus in Dessau. More details: Characteristics: A classic KnollStudio Design; produced after the original design of Breuer. The KnollStudio logo and the signature of Marcel Breuer are imprinted in the lower frame of the chair. Construction: Seamless formed round tube steel, high gloss chromed. Leather straps out of Cowhide leather, Spinneybeck Belting leather and Haired Hide. For usage on hard grounds, the skids are equipped with plastic slides. Surface: The upholstery in Cowhide leather is available in black, light brown and natural white. The upholstery in Spinneybeck Belting leather is available in a wide colours selection. Awards: The Museum of Modern Art Award, 1968 / Recognition as "Work of Art" Germany, 1982. Also in our blog: Exhibition suggestion: The Bauhaus #itsalldesign

With distinctive shapes inspired by primitive weaponry and a seat that appears suspended above the frame, the sculptural form of the Chieftains Chair (1949) changed the future of Danish design. Finn Juhl created the chair for the 1949 Cabinetmakers’ Guild in Copenhagen. During the exhibition, King Frederick IX sat in the chair, causing a journalist to suggest calling it the “King’s Chair.” But Juhl didn’t like how pretentious that sounded and said, “You had better call it a chieftain’s chair,” which the journalist did. (At some point the apostrophe was dropped.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark. Finn Juhl believed that “the craftsman’s ability to form is probably the same as that of a sculptor.” The Chieftains Chair received the Danish Design Award in the Classics category for 2012.
