Dedicated to @mychanel, who helped me when I was brand new and clueless, and who has since become a good friend.
It was April, 2010. I was reading the current New Yorker, and came across an article about a web site with the odd name of “Polyvore” that was not only about fashion… it was actually interactive. They featured a site user named “mychanel” who whipped out something called a “set” in less than 30 minutes. “I can certainly spare half an hour once in a while to play with fashion,” I thought to myself. (This is the part where you laugh hysterically.) “I think I’ll check it out.”
And so I did.
My initial sets were embarrassing, of course. But even my clumsy first attempt, with the unoriginal title “This Is My First Set,” garnered four (count ‘em!) faves (we called them “faves” back then). I began making friends. And my friends helped me. @helleka taught me about the magic square frame, and now my sets were properly balanced. @doozer taught me about the magic white circle and square, to place behind bare places in clothes, and now a blotch of black didn’t show through the middle of a white tee. I entered contests. I even won a few. And I still remember how excited I was when I got my first Top Set in August, 2010, only 4 short months after I joined.
The highlight of my Polyvore experience is my visit to Polyvore Headquarters on June 27. Eleven of us were invited, and we were treated so graciously. This behind-the-scenes peek at Polyvore was fascinating. The energy and creativity of this small company is astounding. They REALLY care about their users. They listen to us, and always look for new and better ways to make our Polyvore experience better. Plus, they’re a great bunch of people!
