Whether something is modern for 80 years or modern beyond its years, the date when it was made is not as relevant as how and why it was designed. The Murano Chandelier (1920) is made with a glass-forging technique developed to amplify flickering candlelight in the 17th century. Produced on the island of Murano, it represents the grandeur of centuries-old craftsmanship. Dramatic in its scale, color and delicate filigree, the design is a reproduction of a Venetian-style chandelier, with scrolling leaf and flower motifs. Due to the artisan craftsmanship that goes into each chandelier, some of the joints will show clear pieces of glass. This is not a defect but part of the process that insures no two pieces will be exactly the same. UL Listed. Bulbs (not included): incandescent 40W/120V/E12/torpedo. Made in Italy.

    2modern.com
Marking Poul Henningsen's 120th birthday on 9 September, Louis Poulsen launched the new PH 3½-3 pendant. Based on Poul Henningsen's original drawings from the late 1920s and early 1930s, it features his renowned three-shade system. The pendant has metal shades, available in green, yellow, red and white. The fixture housing is silk mat brown and made of copper. All colors are based on Poul Henningsen's color universe. Like the designer, the fixtures are colorful! As an extra feature, all shades have a white painted rolled edge, accentuating the familiar profile of the three-shade fixture and creating beautiful optical symmetry. The shades are pressed at Louis Poulsen's factory in Vejen, by Louis Poulsen's own staff – a craft only very few are trained in. Although the fixture is over 80 years old, it is both modern and classic at the same time, making it ideally suited to a broad range of interior design environments. It is seen as a charming, rustic, functional and unpretentious fixture. But it is much more. The PH 3½-3 pendant is a piece of Danish lighting design history. It provides functional, decorative light, and gives any interior a boost simply by being there, whether lit or unlit. It is beautiful alone, or grouped with other fixtures. Features. Designed by Poul Henningsen, 1925/1926. Type: Pendant light. The unique, sexy and subtle Stamen Pendant (2004) is the work of Jeremy Pyles for Niche Modern, a company that happened a bit by accident. When opening a homewares store in SoHo, Jeremy Pyles and Mary Welch were unable to find lights that satisfied their “super picky sensibilities.” Then Jeremy saw a man selling blown glass vases out of the back of his truck. The glass designer wasn’t sure he could create the shape Jeremy was looking for – telling him that “glass is not meant to curve in on itself” – but the two of them kept at it, eventually creating three pendants to light the front of the Niche store. The lights weren’t for sale, but customers kept asking for them and a new business was soon born. Made in U.S.A. Stamen Pendants are made of hand-blown glass, and no two are exactly the same (like snowflakes). The result is a play of light and dark, strength and delicateness, simple lines and lush colors. The fixture is designed around the shape of the bulb (included): a tubular dimmable incandescent 120V/75W, which Jeremy selected after studying 30 or more bulbs.

One of the most sought-after modern lighting designs at auction today, the Fun Lamps give modernism a decorative dimension without being cute – think of them as functional jewelry for interiors. The cascading design is composed of hand-cut mother of pearl discs, which make wonderful musical sounds when stirred by a breeze. These lamps have an ethereal presence, with light shining through the discs to produce a warm, opulent glow. Bulbs (not included): incandescent E26. Made in Denmark. Each lamp is stamped with Panton’s signature and comes with a certificate of authenticity. UL listed and suitable for commercial use. Ships flat to avoid tangling; assembly required.
  • Tropico Ellipse Suspension Light By Foscarini
    2modern.com
The rings onto which the lozenge-shaped elements that form Tropico are hooked are inspired by the earth’s parallels. By this concept the name of this newly-conceived suspension lamp is inspired. Employing the decorative features of chandeliers with cut glass elements, Tropico’s volume is created by the repetition of a single linear element. Tropico has a decidedly sculptural presence, although it remains easy to interpret. It produces an all embracing, atmospheric light, thanks to the inner cylinder that filters and spreads the luminous fluorescent flow. The finishes available give two strongly contrasting effects: the ice version lets the light through, while the opaque ivory version recalls the almost ethic vision of an oriental lantern. With Tropico Foscarini confirms its vocation of developing projects aimed at characterizing spaces and encouraging interaction between the designer and the product. The Ellipse versions meets design needs in the environment and can be used in composition to create great luminous scenographies. Suspension lamp with diffused light. Features. Tropico Collection.
