  • Knoll Bird Chair - No Ottoman
    hivemodern.com
Design Harry Bertoia, 1952. Welded steel rods, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. Harry Bertoia's 1950 experiment with bending metal rods into practical art produced a revered collection of seating, including the exquisite Bird chair. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chair's delicate appearance belies its strength and durability. In Bertoia's own words, "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." Italian sculptor, university lecturer and furniture designer, Harry Bertoia was an inventor of form and an enricher of design. He introduced a new material by turning industrial wire rods into a design icon. Educated at the Detroit School of Arts & Crafts and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Bertoia taught metal crafts at Cranbrook while working with Charles Eames to develop his signature molded plywood chairs. Eero Saarinen commissioned him to design a metal sculptured screen for the General Motors Technical Center in Detroit. His awards include the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA's Gold Medal. A classic, modern design that enhances any environment, Bertoia's Bird chair remains a fascinating study in bent metal and a fixture of mid-century design. Knoll is the only authorized and licensed manufacturer of the Bertoia Collection which has been in continuous production since 1952. Chair: 38.5" w | 33" d | 40.25" h | seat: 14.5" h.
  • Harry Bertoia Bertoia Bird Chair with Full Cover in Classic Bouclé
    dwr.com
With his iconic seating collection, Harry Bertoia transformed industrial wire rods into a new furniture form. The events that made this work possible began a decade earlier at Cranbrook Academy of Art when Bertoia met Florence Knoll Bassett (then Florence Schust). Years later, the Italian-born designer was invited to work for Florence and her husband Hans Knoll. Bertoia was given the freedom to work on whatever suited him, without being held to a strict design agenda, and the result of this arrangement was the Bertoia Seating Collection (1952). Featuring a delicate filigreed appearance that’s supremely strong, these airy seats are sculpted out of steel rods. In his art, Bertoia experimented with open forms and metal work, and these chairs were an extension of that work. "If you look at the chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture," said Bertoia. ”Space passes through them.” After designing his seating collection, Bertoia returned to focusing mostly on sculpture. His work was often used in projects by Eero Saarinen (another Cranbrook friend), notably at MIT and the Dulles International Airport. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy. Full cover is stretched over wire seat basket and attached to seat basket with hooks. The Bird Chair and Ottoman have been in continuous production since 1952. Frame is scratch, chip and chemical resistant. The Knoll logo is stamped into the base of the chair and ottoman.

Designers Charles and Ray Eames established their long and legendary relationship with Herman Miller in 1946 with the boldly original molded plywood dining and lounge chairs. Their technique of molding sheets of plywood veneer into gentle curves gave their molded plywood lounge chair a soft appearance - and created an inviting seat of unlikely comfort. Innovation again meets the iconic design with an updated offering: upholstery. This version includes an upholstered seat & back with a molded polyurethane cushion that enhances the chair's original character with increased comfort and new color. • Geiger® Scissor™ Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Ward Bennett, 1964. Welded tubular steel or wood frame, upholstery. Made in the USA by Geiger® Ward Bennett took inspiration for the Scissor chair from the hammock-style chaise transatlantique of the mid-nineteenth century. An early version of the Scissor appeared in 1964. By 1968, Bennett had refined the design, settling on softened rectangular sections. The Scissor frame is available in a wide array of wood or metal finishes; it can also be upholstered in virtually any leather or textile. Ward Bennett's story is a remarkable one. His career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in the garment district in New York City. At 15, he designed his first clothing collection; at 16 he left for Europe, where he continued working on fashions. Simplicity and comfort were always his goals. Bennett designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics. He is considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He was hailed by the American Institute of Architects for "transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects." Many of Bennett's designs are in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection as well as in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; he is also in Interior Design magazine's Hall of Fame. Wood frame: 30" d | 24" w | 33" h | seat: 15.5" h. Metal frame: 30" d | 24" w | 33" h | seat: 15.5" h.

  • Knoll Riart Rocker
    hivemodern.com
Design Carlos Riart, 1982. Solid lumber, laminated runners & arms, upholstery. Made in USA by Knoll. Following the success of the Nakashima chair and the design trend towards a more residential look and feel, KnollStudio reintroduces the Riart Rocker. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the design of the Barcelona Pavilion, Knoll selected Carlos Riart, the Barcelona-based industrial designer, to design a piece of furniture. Knoll's design brief specified only that the piece be a "lounge chair object" and that it should be strongest in profile to match the character of Mies's iconic chair from 1929. Riart's chair was considered a successful tribute to its forebear, dramatic in form and exquisite in hand-finished industrial execution. The chair is reintroduced in two versions: American Walnut with light lacquer finish or medium Figured English Sycamore. Both versions have decorative inlays (Mother of Pearl for light Walnut or ebony inlays for Sycamore), an instance of postmodern craft enhancing utility. 24.25" W | 42.5" d | 38.25" h | seat: 21" h | arms: 24.5" h.
