I stared out the car window,
the little white lines blurring as we passed by.
Cole's hand was intertwined with mine resting
on the space inbetween us.

"Not much longer now...
we should be able to see the bridge soon."

I didn't reply.
Instead I just kept staring.

I don't know why I was in such a quiet mood.
I was really looking forward to this trip.
All of us have.

There was just something about making the trip with Cole,
-my kind of boyfriend-
that made things awkward.

We haven't talked about our status since graduation.
I spent the night at his house after the party.
I hadn't wanted to disturb my parents.
I probably should have just gone home.

After that he started planning our trip to the city.
He was really excited to show me his campus and meet his friends.
I just wanted to spend the week sight-seeing.
I would have an entire year to see his new york life.

I had been to New York only once before.
I was seven. my sisters lost me at coney island.
they were grounded for a month.

"Kales, look up ahead,"
Cole said, breaking he out of my daydream.

Just ahead, past a large row of trees,
was the Brooklyn bridge.
and just beyond that was nyc.

"Takes your breath away,
doesn't it?"

"It sure does,"
I whispered.

When we finally for to the hotel
all I wanted to do was sleep.
Cole, however, had other plans.

"So I told the guys we would meet them for dinner.
There's this place on tenth street with the best curly fries."

"Now? It's one o'clock in the morning!"
I was actually amazed people ate dinner this late

"They're open all night.
This is the city babe,
most places never actually close."

"We'll I'd still rather go tomorrow.
Right now all I want to do us sleep,"
I told him as I drew the covers back on the double bed.
For some reason we decided to share a room.

"I already told the guys we'd go.
Come on Kales, just for an hour.
Then we can come back and rest."

"You go ahead,
I'm not very hungry anyway."
I finished my sentence by climbing into bed,
snuggling down against the down pillows.

"Whatever," Cole answered.
He stormed out of the room then,
slamming the door behind him.

I stepped out into the cold New York air,
hoping to get a little relief from all the excitement.

Don't get wrong. I was happy for Tabby.
She's worked hard for this night, and she deserves it,
I'm just not really in a celebrating mood right now.

"Kalynn, what are you doing out here?"
Alex asked as she came over to me.

From behind us we could see our entire class,
not to mention the dozens of film industry hot-shots
laughing and having a good time.

"I just needed some air. I a bit stuff in there,
what with all the people," I fibbed.

"That's cool.
Gosh, it's so weird when you thing about it.
Our friend actually made a movie."

"Yeah, it's almost surreal."
I replied, wrapping my arms across my chest,
suddenly freezing.

"All this time we thought she was over in Paris partying,
having the time of her life."

There was a loud roar from behind us
and we turned to see everyone in the room straining to see who had just gotten here.
Probably some B-list celebrity.

"I'm going to go get a drink," I told Alex,
but she too was trying to see who had just arrived
so I walked off by myself.

After spending an hour at the bar,
and realizing the only served wine, champagne, and gin,
I finally found the woman of the hour.

"Tabby! Congratulations," I half yelled over the crowd.

"Thank you. It really means a lot that you all could be here,"
she said as she sipped on her champagne.
New York is turning Coldgrove kids into the classy kind of drunks.

"Wouldn't miss is for the world," I replied as I took another sip of my wine.

"So where's Cole? Didn't you two come together?"
She asked as she looked around for my so-called date.

"I think he saw a model and ran off to talk to her.
Orbit could have been a him, I couldn't tell," I told her dryly.
I really didn't want to talk about Cole right now.

"Is everything okay between you two?
You two are really cute together you know."

"Everything's fine. We're just not the kind of couple that has to spend every waking minute together."

"That's good, I really hope you guys make it this time,"
she said before being dragged away for pictures or something.

"Wakey, wakey. It's a beautiful day!"
I heard coming from the other side of my comforter.
Who the hel.l had a key to my room?

"Isn't it a little too early to be this chipper?"
I asked whoever had chosen to interrupt my sleep.

"Well I considered throwing ice water on you instead, but then I decided I like my life the way it is,"
the other person said.

I finally emerged from my fluffy fortress,
I now understood why people love vacation so much,
to see Dylan sitting at the table, peeling an apple.

"I told them I was you and said I lost my key at some rave last night,"
she said, answering my unasked questions and placing a hotel key on the table.

"What are you doing here?"
I asked instead, having everything else answered for me.

"I need some boyfriend-free time,
and judging your behavior at the film thingy,
I figured you did too."

"Oh. Thanks. I was actually planning on going to Columbia today,
check out the campus."

"Great! Ill tag along.
As long as you go to Juilliard with me."

After a twenty minute shower and a forty dollar can ride,
we were walking through the Columbia campus,
admiring the scenery and the architecture.

"You are so lucky. This place is beautiful.
Boo you for getting to love here,"

"It's not like you'll be across the country.
You're welcome to visit anytime,"
I told her as I looked down at my map.

"Oh I will " she purred as she watched a group of guys walked past us,
all sweaty and carrying what appeared to be rugby equipment.

"You never change, do you?"
I ask with a smile on my face.

She just replied by winking at me,
a hint of mischief in her eyes

The week was finally over.
Today we were leaving New York
heading back to our sad little town.

I was packing my suitcase when Cole stepped through the door.
His hair was a mess and he was still wearing the clothes from last night.

"About time you showed up,"
I said as I tossed a pile of shirts into my bag.

"What the h.ell is that supposed to mean?"
he yelled, probably louder he meant to.

"Just that I haven't seen you in a few days,
which is odd seeing as how we're sharing a room."

"I was just giving you your space.
Isn't that what you wanted?"

"I wanted one night to sleep.
I didn't tell you to disappear for a whole week!"
I yelled back, getting a bit fired up.

"Well I'm sorry. Next time ill be sure to ask which days you want me around."

He stomped away then, walking towards the bathroom.
I heard the shower turn on a second later and decided to let it drop for now.

I finished packing the last if my stuff fairly quickly,
I didn't bring that much anyway,
and just as I was zipping up my case coke stepped out of the bathroom.

He was wearing only boxers,
his hair still wet from the shower,
as he walked over to where his bag if clothes was.

"You know what, I think I'm just going
to catch a ride back with one of the girls,"
I told him, breaking the silence.

"That's fine. I was thinking about staying here anyway,"
he muttered as he slipped on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.

"I guess I'll see you later then."
I said as I got up to leave.

I stopped at the door,
wondering if he had anything else to say,
but he just sat in the bed, texting someone.

I closed the door softly behind me and made my way to the elevator.
It wasn't until I reached the lobby that I realized I was crying.

I quickly wiped my face with the back of my hand,
put my happy face on,
and joined my friends by the doors.

{{so if it seems like their relationship took a drastic turn - they were all lovey dovey in my last set and fighting in this one - remember that these two have a lot of history together. Plus Cole has this huge temper. Hope you all enjoyed it}}

the greatest thing in the world? writing.

be your own character.
and in case you were wondering?
"The 'Oxford comma' is an optional comma before the word 'and' at the end of a list:
ex., We sell books, videos, and magazines.
It's known as the Oxford comma because it was traditionally used by printers, readers, and editors at Oxford University Press. Not all writers and publishers use it, but it can clarify the meaning of a sentence when the items in a list are not single words:
ex., These items are available in black and white, red and yellow, and blue and green.
The Oxford comma is also known as the 'serial comma'."
