Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saatinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. “The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen Tulip Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Features: The Eero Saarinen Collection. Designed by Eero Saarinen 1957. Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. The bluestone tabletop is hand-cut and finished with a clear wax topcoat. Bluestone is a natural stone selected for its beauty, strength and durability. A combination of solid reclaimed pine wood and Douglas fir wood are kiln-dried and hand-carved by skilled artisans into the classic pedestal shape. Natural variations in color, texture and pattern of both the bluestone and reclaimed pine make these pieces unique. Each piece will have slightly different shading and grain patterns. Due to the nature of a multi-layered finish that is hand-applied by our craftsmen, there will be variation from piece to piece. Some small splits may occur, but will only add to the character of the piece. Knots and joint lines are a natural property and add interest but without affecting performance. All natural wood will display movement from season to season because of changes in temperature and humidity. 39" round seats up to 2 chairs. 48" round seats up to 4 chairs. 54" round seats up to 6 chairs.
