  • George Nelson Bubble Pendant - Cigar
    shophorne.com
First designed in 1947, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection has stood the test of time. The simple structural shapes with the innovative use of taut plastic over fine steel wire were born from George Nelson's frustration to buy a Swedish-made silk lamp which produced a soft light. This unique use of shape and material produces a diffused light that is free of glare while offering an abundance of illumination. These pieces are part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remain icons in modern lighting. Modernica discovered these designs and reintroduced the series in 1989 with a dedication to reproducing these stunning, classic lights with authenticity and craftsmanship. Modernica still uses the same materials and methods to hand craft each piece in their Michigan facility. The classic Saucer Pendant is available in 4 sizes, with 6 feet of cord (extra large comes with 9 feet) and a 5.25 inch brushed nickel ceiling plate.

The Mica L pendant acts as a beautiful node, creating a sense of space marked with an ambient glow.
  • Louis Poulsen PH 5 Pendant
    shophorne.com
The iconic three shade system of the PH series of lighting fixtures was created in 1925/1926 by Poul Henningsen for an exhibition in Paris. The designer was determined to produce glare free lighting that was directed where it was needed most while creating soft shadows. The three shade system creates an even distribution of light as each shade reduces the light equally due to their distance from the light source. This is the first lamp to have been created using the scientific model of the logarithmic spiral as a basis for light distribution. There have been approximately one thousand variations of the original lamp with several floor, table, wall, and pendant versions currently available. The reflective three-shade system of the PH 5 Pendant provides 100% glare-free light, directing the greater part of it downward. By emanating light both downward and laterally, it virtually illuminates itself. A warmer tone of light is created by the inside red cone and the small blue reflector of the classic fixture. The PH 5 Pendant is available in five colors. It is shipped with a white ceiling canopy, 12 feet of white installation cable and accepts a 200W max E26 base bulb (not included).

The way the walnut planes in the Muto both block and bounce light make for a very dynamic composition of light and shadows, from any vantage point. While the pinwheel form, with its repeating elements is symmetric, it appears very sculptural from any one view. The modern floating ideal is realized in the Muto. By holding each walnut element away from its neighbor, so each plane floats, the whole fixture feels light, as if it were floating itself.

In 2003, while opening their homewares store Niche in SoHo, Jeremy Pyles and Mary Welch were unable to find lights that satisfied their “super picky sensibilities.” Taking matters into his own hands, Pyles designed the subtly sexy hand-blown Stamen Pendant, and Niche Modern was born. Fast-forward several years later, and we now have his Sola 36 Chandelier (2009), which takes obvious styling cues from the original Stamen. This chandelier features a carefully handcrafted aluminum canopy and five hand-blown glass globes with Edison light bulbs for a nostalgic touch that juxtaposes nicely with the piece’s decidedly modern feel. Like snowflakes, no two of these chandeliers are alike. Specify 36-, 48- or 60-inch overall height when ordering. Bulbs (included): 40W Edison incandescent. Made in U.S.A.

Born in Tokyo and raised in New England, Jonah Takagi earned his bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. Pursuing his two passions, he has spent the last decade designing furniture and playing bass guitar for several indie rock bands. Unfortunately, being on the road gave him little time to showcase his furniture, leaving him with a house full of products that no one had seen. To showcase his growing body of work, he founded Atelier Takagi in 2005. With a nod toward the Memphis movement, Takagi borrowed that American city’s nickname for his Bluff City Pendant (2009). A mix of industrial and refined aesthetics, this pendant features a bulb that is enclosed in a metal cage on the top for ambient lighting and a solid metal shade on the bottom for concentrated downward lighting. Bluff City was nominated for a Dwell magazine Modern World Award in 2011. Bulb (not included): incandescent 60W/120V/E26 medium base. UL Listed. Made in China. Cream/Copper color is a.

Whether something is modern for 80 years or modern beyond its years, the date when it was made is not as relevant as how and why it was designed. The Murano Chandelier (1920) is made with a glass-forging technique developed to amplify flickering candlelight in the 17th century. Produced on the island of Murano, it represents the grandeur of centuries-old craftsmanship. Dramatic in its scale, color and delicate filigree, the design is a reproduction of a Venetian-style chandelier, with scrolling leaf and flower motifs. Due to the artisan craftsmanship that goes into each chandelier, some of the joints will show clear pieces of glass. This is not a defect but part of the process that insures no two pieces will be exactly the same. UL Listed. Bulbs (not included): incandescent 40W/120V/E12/torpedo. Made in Italy.
