Johan Rohde’s designs are characterised by hammer marks and oxidisation techniques. His designs are also highly stylized in comparison with the naturalistic Art Nouveau style, however, not strictly geometrical either like the typical Art Déco style that followed. Johan Rohde’s designs can therefore be classified neither as Art Nouveau nor Art Déco; instead something in between. The handle on this coffee pot is made out of ebony wood – a very hard type of wood. Each handle is made especially for the individual pot. The socket – the small piece where the handle is attached - is handmade and thus, may vary slightly from pot to pot - it may be only a 1/10 of a millimetre – but still each handle must be fitted specifically for the individual pot. Design year: 1933. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 17.1 cm / 6.73 inches Ø: 17.8 cm / 7 inches.

  • Georg Jensen BLOSSOM sugar bowl 2D
    georgjensen.com
Sugar bowl 2D is part of the blossom tea/coffee set with ebony or mammoth handles, low and stout, with toad’s feet and a magnolia blossom on top is a classic example of Georg Jensen’s work with flora and fauna. He removed the elements he found fascinating from their natural context and incorporated them in his designs, making them come alive in an imaginative and whimsical way. The flower bud was inspired by Japanese art, which uses the magnolia bud as a symbol of the month of May. The toad is also known in Japan and is a symbol of luck. As typical for Georg Jensen’s pieces the decoration was applied to the top and the bottom of the pieces. The surface of the coffee and tea service is covered with delicate hammer marks – a distinct Georg Jensen feature - which softens the reflected light to create the greyish shimmer he associated with moonlight. The chaser makes the pattern on the lid and accentuates the pattern on the feet. The cutlery silversmith forms the Magnolia flowers for the lids and hands it over to the silversmith who will solder it on the lid. The silversmith applies the hammer marks to the body of the pieces and solders on the feet as well as the socket to hold the handle and the spout. Design year: 1905. Materials: Sterling silver. Measurements: H: 11.7 cm / 4.60 inches Ø: 10.4 cm / 4 inches.
  • Sigvard Bernadotte BERNADOTTE thermo jug 0,8L
    georgjensen.com
In 1938 he designed an elegant sterling silver milk jug in a unique design, which gave the inspiration to a new thermo jug. Even though the design for the thermo jug is 65 years old it is still a contemporary piece. Prince Sigvard Bernadotte was concerned with the same functionalism that plays a great part in modern design today, and this without, at any time, losing sight of the visual beauty. The large Bernadotte thermo jug was launched in 2002, and in the fall of 2011, a second smaller version is introduced. This second thermo jug is actually closer to the original design and holds 0.8 L. The thermo jug keeps liquids hot for mimimum 6 hours. Materials: The thermo jug is made from stainless steel with a chrome plated screw-on-lid and handle. The inner liner is also in stainless steel – and non-breakable. The inner part is coated to prevent the taste of coffee and tea to stay in the thermo jug. Measurements: Ø 160 x L 189 x H 188 mm.

  • Georg Jensen GRAPE pitcher 407A
    georgjensen.com
As most of Georg Jensen’s designs Pitcher 407A is in the Art Nouveau style with the characteristic ornamental curved lines, organic structures, decorative ornaments of flora and fauna, and the use of honest and skilfully crafted materials. The Grape Motif was first introduced in 1918 on the Grape Bowls. This Pitcher was designed just after the end of World War 1 (1914-1918 ) - a very rich period where unprecedented abundance of money circulated, trade flourished everywhere and the Silversmithy had a record turnover. During these years Georg Jensen created some hollowware pieces more richly decorated than normally seen from his side. These pieces have a touch of it – it is more distinct in the almost baroque Candelabra No. 383. However, very characteristic of Georg Jensen, he does show restraint in the use of decoration. The exquisite ornamentation is limited to the base leaving the rest of the item only decorated on the surface with hammer marks. The chaser has many hours of work on the base of the pitcher. When the chaser gets the base it is totally smooth so the first step is to draw the pattern to be chased with a pencil. This is necessary to ensure that the convex shaped squares have the exact same size and that the delicate pattern underneath the grapes is laid out correctly. Then the patient work with the hammer and the punches starts. The Pitcher 407A has an ebony handle carved with its own design and it is fitted especially for each individual pitcher. At the bottom of the base of the Pitcher you will find a rod – a strong ring of silver which has been soldered on to make the edge of the base strong and less vulnerable to dents. Design year: 1925. Materials: Sterling silver, ebony. Measurements: H: 23 cm / 9.05 inches.
