  • Stephen Kenn Military Canvas Sofa - Canvas & Marbled Brown Finish
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Composed of a steel welded frame with a marbled brown finish, custom webbing belts, smooth leather straps and re-purposed WWII military fabric for the cushion covers. Each piece is unique, and carries small imperfections, hand-repaired tears, and markings from the soldiers who originally used the material. The shade of olive canvas will vary from piece to piece.

  • Mater Mango Wood Bowl Table - Extra Large
    shophorne.com
An adaptation of traditional wooden lacquer trays, this table is multifunctional and comes in a knock down form. The legs easily detach to help reduce the energy spent on transporting material from various parts of the world, and to allow the table to be used as a bowl, tray or table. The idea is inspired by objects that are simple and had multiple applications, and yet were not burdens on the planet. The shape of the mango table is derived from traditional kneading bowls that used to be lacquered in bright red, and were found extensively across south of India. The mango table has a top made from the wood of a fruit tree. It is grown and tended for, and once the productive life of the tree is over, it is cut down and another one is planted. Incidentally, mango, as a fruit is widely consumed across the country hence the wood is plentiful. It is turned manually on the lathe, showcasing the skill of the `kharaadi' or the wood turning community, thereby supporting local skills. The legs are made of mild steel, machined out of rods. The finishing is done with lead free water based PU lacquers, thereby respecting the local environment.

We want to make beautiful objects for everyday use, whether that’s an indispensable item of kitchen equipment, a clever floating shelf or a beautiful vase that adds the finishing touch to your living space.Wherever we can, we work locally with craftspeople around the world, preserving skills while creating the best modern design. German designer Theresa Arns was experimenting with ways of combining a table and storage when she stumbled upon the idea of a lid that opens by rotating it around one of the legs. The result is elegant, unpretentious and utterly addictive (show it to guests and they will be opening and shutting Turning Table for hours). “My design is quite functional,” says Theresa. “But I also think it’s important that the objects we surround ourselves with have a warm and poetic part.”
