  • Flemming Busk Twilight Sleeper Sofa
    dwr.com
Winner of a furniture competition at the Århus School of Architecture in Denmark in 1999, Flemming Busk’s Twilight Sleep Sofa distills the concept of a convertible couch to a simple cylinder and rectangle. A compact and nicely scaled sofa, the bolster pillow adjusts to three different positions for customized seat depths (19.5"/23"/34.75") and lumbar support. The Twilight offers further options by converting into a daybed, queen-size bed or two twin beds. To transform Twilight into a comfortable sleeping space for two, simply move the bolster out of the way and place the top cushion on the floor. The two mattresses, when pushed together are larger than a queen-size bed, but not quite as large as a king. For sheets, use two twin extra-long fitted sheets with coordinating flat sheets or one king-size flat sheet. A great small space solution, Twilight turns any room into a guest room. The slipcover is removable for cleaning and is welted at the seams with contrast piping for a clean aesthetic. Casters on the rear legs make for easy mobility. Made in Denmark.

  • Zuzunaga Cuzco Pouf - Shape 2
    shophorne.com
The Cuzco Collection by Zuzunaga is inspired by an ancient wall on the outskirts of Cuzco, Peru believed to be built by the Incas. The ancient Saksaywaman dry stone wall is built of gigantic stones that fit together so perfectly a single piece of paper cannot fit between them. Each of the 4 geometric shapes in the Cuzco Collection will fit together in only one way to create a specific pattern but individually can be formed into endless combinations of shapes and colors. The poufs are upholstered in wool using Divina fabric by Kvadrat. The primary colors are accented with a contrasting trim. Each of the 4 of the Cuzco Poufs play on the right angle lending them to be used in corners as a chair or table or in the center of the room in various combinations. Let your imagination soar in combining the shapes and colors to bring a sense of fun and adventure to any room. Each of the 4 shapes are available in red, blue, yellow and green.

“Furniture that is too obviously designed,” said Milo Baughman, “is very interesting, but too often belongs only in museums.” While we could certainly see his Drum Table (1970s) in a museum, it would earn its place there for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ornamentation. Distilling the idea of an occasional table to its simplest form, Baughman’s cylindrical design draws you in with its smoothness and warmth. It features seams that are painstakingly welded, ground and polished by hand until they blend in as much as possible. Once constructed, Drum is coated with bronze, oxidized and hand-relieved to give it a unique patina, eschewing the sterility of machine-made pieces. It includes leveling floor glides to compensate for uneven surfaces. Made in U.S.A.

    dwr.com
If you combined the work of I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen, the result might very well look like the Platner Collection (1962). Warren Platner worked with both of the industrial and organic design giants before turning his attention to steel wire furniture, for which he devised the structure and production method. Requiring as many as 1,000 welds and crafted out of wire and space, the Stool, available in a range of upholstery options, demonstrates Platner's belief that there is room in modernism "for the kind of decorative, gentle, graceful design that appeared in a period style like Louis XV." Constructed of metal components that are finished in bright nickel with a clear lacquer protective coating, the stool features a clear plastic extrusion ring surrounding the base to protect floors. The Platner Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified for low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer.

After studying at the famous Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and working for architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, Finn Juhl set up his own design office in 1945. Later that year, Juhl and master cabinetmaker Niels Voder, collaborators since 1937, created a buzz at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. In 1951, Juhl went on to make his stateside debut at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in designing a meeting chamber at United Nations Headquarters. The trained architect and self-taught furniture designer drew the inspiration for his Finn Juhl Credenza (1955) from the cubist movement and Goethe’s color wheel, reflected in the piece’s simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes and its sliding doors and six trays finished in varying shades of blue lacquer. The left interior has two removable pegged shelves, the right an open compartment next to the one for the trays. Holding the walnut body, the hand-burnished steel frame with wooden feet lends the piece airiness. Ships fully assembled. Made in Denmark.

  • Essey Grand Illusion Side Table - Clear
    shophorne.com
Illusion is a timeless statement of beauty, simplicity and functionality. As with so many great designs, inspiration is often derived from a story: "One day I was passing a Café in Copenhagen. There were round tables with white tablecloths. Each cloth was square and almost touched the floor. I stopped and took couple photos. I then went to a plastic workshop, showed them the image and asked if it was possible to make such an object in plastic. The answer was no. But I continued my quest and after a few months some samples were ready. The result was Illusion, a stunning example of Symbolic Functionalism that has received an extremely enthusiastic reception from both the press and consumers." John Brauer, designer. All Illusion tables are hand made and thus are slightly unique.

The Baker Sofa was created in 1951, the year that Juhl brought international recognition to Danish design with his U.S. debut in the "Good Design" exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. This was also the year when he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oh, and did we mention he had just turned 39? In looking at his Baker Sofa, we can see how Juhl was influenced by modern sculpture, like the moving mobiles created by Alexander Calder. Another recognizable Juhl characteristic is how one element appears suspended over another, with a space in between. In doing this with the back of this sofa, he gave the Baker a surprising visual lightness for a sofa of this size. (Imagine how different it would look as one solid piece.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark.

"I have always been inspired by the language of turntables and entertainment units from the 1960s," says Singaporean designer Nathan Yong. Which is a remarkable statement when you learn that Yong grew up in a wooden hut by the sea, where he and his brother made their own toys and "waited for low tides so we could pick up treasures from the shore." Growing up with the beach as entertainment, Yong has developed into a resourceful designer, whose work captivated us with its quiet elegance. At Salone del Mobile , the annual furniture fair in Milan, Yong showed his Line Media Console (2010), inspired by "the fluid streamlined forms of 1960s stereo components." An elegant cabinet with a louvered exterior, it is designed so a remote control will operate the media components inside even when the doors are closed. • Isamu Noguchi Noguchi® Prismatic Table
    dwr.com
A former apprentice to Constantin Brancusi, midcentury master Isamu Noguchi was no stranger to working with metal. The aluminum Prismatic Table (1957), the last piece of furniture that Noguchi designed, is an example of his return to the medium in the 1950s, during which time he created both functional and fine arts objects out of metal sheeting. Evoking the Japanese art of origami, the table features carefully bent and folded angles that lend dimension and a sense of solidity to the design. Small but sturdy, it's a crisp and classic side or end table. This is the first time the three-legged version of the table has been produced, and is artfully manufactured by the Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation.
