  • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Executive Armchair with Metal Legs - Leather
    dwr.com
The design of Eero Saarinen's Executive Armchair (1950) began more than a decade earlier, when he and Charles Eames submitted several designs to the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at the MoMA. The pair, who'd been friends and collaborators since meeting at Cranbrook Academy of Art, won first prize. These fluid, sculptural shapes influenced the future work of both men; for Saarinen, most notably in his Womb, Tulip and Executive chairs. The Executive was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane to take advantage of the technical advances in plastics. The feel of this classic seat, however, remains unchanged. The molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter and the contoured plywood seat supported by metal or wood legs. Unlike Saarinen's furniture, which was consistently sculptural in form, these fluid lines didn't appear in his architecture until the 1950s. When looking at the dome-shaped glass wall of the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, it's not a big leap to see the same shape in the back of his Executive Chair. This chair is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified¿ for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.

  • Philippe Starck Victoria Ghost Chair
    dwr.com
Philippe Starck's Victoria Ghost Chair (2006), like her cousin the Louis Ghost, presented a significant manufacturing challenge for Kartell. Crafted from a single piece of injection-molded polycarbonate, the medallion back could only be created thanks to Kartell's accumulated knowledge, built over years of innovation in plastic manufacturing. Sleek and sturdy, the baroque-style chair is transparent, and coordinates with the Louis Ghost Armchair. Addressing the design of the collection to the Dallas Morning News, Starck commented that it "has a mix ofand styles based on our shared memories. We all own this piece in a way. The chair is well balanced; I try to be balanced myself." Suitable for indoor and outdoor use in residential and commercial settings. Made in Italy. The single-piece injection-molding process used in making every Ghost Chair leaves behind several faint artifacts that are perfectly normal, not defects.

  • Charles and Ray Eames Eames® Wire Chair with Seat Pad (DKR.5)
    dwr.com
After refining their molded plastic chairs, Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with making a chair from welded wire. To succeed, the Eameses had to figure out how to create a design with the strength they needed while keeping manufacturing costs as low as possible. Ultimately, they decided on using lighter-gauge wire doubled over into a rim that sandwiches heavier inner wire to form their Eames Wire Chair (1951), which won them their first American mechanical design patent. Its organic shape and airy silhouette are complemented by what’s commonly referred to as an Eiffel base (because of its trademark shape). This is an authentic Eames product by Herman Miller. Commercial quality. Made in U.S.A. DKR.5 stands for dining height, wire shell, rod base, seat pad.

  • Frank Gehry Gehry High Sticking High Back Chair
    dwr.com
Frank Gehry once wrote that designing a new chair was like being asked "to find the meaning of life while standing on one foot. It's like a Talmudic question." In 1989, when Knoll approached him with that same challenge, the only way Gehry would consider it was if Knoll would set him up in a workshop similar to that of Charles and Ray Eames, which he fondly recalls visiting in his youth. Two years after receiving the Pritzker Prize -- "the Nobel of architecture" – the designer released the Gehry Collection (1990) for Knoll. Paying homage to his Canadian roots, he named the pieces after ice hockey terms; the wafer-thin strips of laminated maple are bent, woven and curled into featherweight yet sturdy forms, evoking the simple strength of hockey sticks themselves. Made in U.S.A. Stamped with the KnollStudio logo, Frank Gehry’s signature and the date of production. Thermoset adhesive provides structural rigidity without the need for metal connectors, while allowing for ergonomic movement and spring-like comfort. Back of Chair flexes for added comfort, and built-in lumbar curve enhances support. All wood grains run in the same direction for resilience. Accolades include ASID Award, ROSCO Award, ID Magazine Gold Award, ICFE Award for Excellence, IBD Silver, Prince Takamatsu World Culture Award and Time Magazine Best Design of the Year (all 1992).

  • Milo Baughman 1188 Chair in Leather
    dwr.com
The 1188 Chair (1968) was Milo Baughman’s favorite chair and the one with which he chose to furnish the home of business partner and friend Thayer Coggin. Given that the Coggin family could’ve had any dining chair in the company’s inventory, the 1188 is something special indeed. Baughman and Coggin met in 1953 and formed a powerful partnership that lasted for five decades. The North Carolina-based company is still the exclusive manufacturer of Baughman furniture to this day. The designer’s work was included in High Styles: Twentieth Century American Design at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1985. Baughman was inducted into the Furniture Design Hall of Fame in 1987. Made in U.S.A. Natural leather is prized for its unique markings. Scars, scrapes and wrinkles are not defects. For the Ivory/Bronze chair, the bronze finish is created by hand and is not uniform. This is intentional, and the marks of the craftsman are left on the chair to add warmth and character to each piece.

  • Josef Hoffmann Hoffmann Side Chair
    dwr.com
Josef Hoffmann is well known for the simple, restrained, yet visually interesting dining chairs – several intended for cafés – that he designed early in the 20th century. The influence of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen in his work, but Hoffmann also embraced the industrial age. Rather than rejecting traditional decoration, he succeeded in making it serve structural principles, which he believed should determine the forms of buildings, interiors and objects. Whether admiring one of his chairs or the Sanatorium Purkersdorf he designed in 1903, you can see Hoffmann’s emphasis on straight, unadorned lines, characteristics that are in keeping with the style of the Viennese Secession. The Hoffmann Side Chair (1925), designed in collaboration with Josef Frank, is made at the bentwood factory founded by Michael Thonet in 1861. Made in the Czech Republic.
  • George Nakashima Nakashima Straight-Backed Chair
    dwr.com
Presenting a very special re-introduction: the Nakashima Straight-Backed Chair (1946), designed by George Nakashima for Knoll. Nakashima was an MIT-trained architect who was known to describe himself as “Japanese Shaker.” This was meant to express his belief that his designs should be treated as everyday functional objects, not precious possessions. Such thinking was consistent with the Mingei Movement that influenced Nakashima and his work. The Movement sought to rescue common crafts that had been discarded as a result of industrial revolution, like traditional Japanese joinery and the use of natural. What’s remarkable about his work for Knoll is that Nakashima was able to maintain the sculptural lines and fine craftsmanship of his Straight-Backed Chair even at the mass production level. This reconciliation of art and industry, and the contradictions that accompanied it, continued to fascinate Nakashima throughout his career. His work has been presented at many exhibitions worldwide, including the retrospective “Full Circle” at the American Craft Museum in New York. This chair is manufactured by Knoll. Made in U.S.A.

  • Niels Otto Møller Møller Model 55 Armchair with Natural Woven Seat
    dwr.com
In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 55 Armchair (1951), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability – easily withstanding decades of frequent use – and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What’s amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it’s woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels’ son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. These chairs are authentic, fully licensed products of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Made in Denmark. With its distinctive arms, the Model 55 Armchair allows you to pull the chair close to a dining table, without the arms hitting the table. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 425-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand.
