When I was growing up, I would eat at the Automat whenever I took the train from the suburbs to NYC. It was cheap, clean, and good. Each item of food was behind a little glass door. You'd feed in your nickels, the door would pop open, and out would come... a chicken salad sandwich (25 cents), a glass of milk (a dime) and, if I was feeling rich, a slice of apple pie (fifteen cents).

I believe there were only Automats in NYC and Philly. The last one closed in 1991. Now there are plenty of places for fast food... but it's just. not. the. same.

Okay, that's enough strolling down memory lane. My next set will be from this century!
