Tell us about yourself.
My name is Andrea, but my childhood nickname is Andi. I am a domestic engineer, aka stay-at-home mom. I will be 45 this month, and I’ve been married for 26 years to my high school sweetheart. We have three lovely daughters, ages 14, 13 and 7. We share our home with a terrier mix named Buddy, a newly adopted Bernese Mountain dog named Ellie and a guinea pig named Snoopy.
Where do you live?
I live in a small town in southern New Jersey.
What is your favorite brand/designer? What do you like about that brand?
To be honest, I don't have a particular favorite. I like things that are affordable and unique, so that opens up quite a few different brands. I would really have to say that brand names don't necessarily dictate what I like. I could go to Target and find something to like and use in a design just as easily and maybe more so than in a higher-end store.
Where do you get your interior design inspiration?
My inspiration comes from a mix of things ... mood, an appealing color, a particular item. I really like to find one item that I love, draw the colors and style from it and build my design around it. I also like to allow budget to inspire me. I find it challenging to have a small budget and make BIG things happen with it by repurposing items and looking at thrift shops, yard sales, etc. to find things that can be used cost-effectively. Take note, though -- unless I am consciously designing on a budget, my designs are sometimes a bit over the top. I think I will start to create some sets with budget in mind. We should ALL be able to afford style!
What are your personal aspirations/goals?
It's funny, I never realized how much I enjoyed putting things together until I found Polyvore. Sure, I knew that I enjoyed it when working on my own home’s style but I didn't know how good I was at it until the past couple of years. Most importantly, I would love to start my own design business -- not typical interior design, but more of a virtual room design/makeover business and budget-friendly design/shopping service. I am really working hard to get things in place for this venture and hope that it all falls where it may so I can have my own thing. I need my own thing.
How has Polyvore affected your life?
Hmmm, well, my daily routine sometimes comes to a halt when I am overcome with an idea for my next great design. The laundry has been put on hold some days because I just have that desire to complete a set. But it is a good thing, and I have a very supportive family. Designing on Polyvore provides me an outlet that otherwise, as a stay-at-home mom, wouldn't be available.
How would you describe your set style?
Sporadic. Unique. I don't always follow the rules, if there really are any rules in fashion or style. I really just let my mood dictate my designs.
How often do you sign on and what is the first thing you do when you sign on?
I try to log on daily, and when I do, I will usually check my activity first and then check out the designs of my fellow Polyvorians. I LOVE to see what others have created.
What is your favorite Polyvore feature?
Aside from the obvious design component, I like the ability to shop and design based on price and color. This makes working within a budget much more feasible. Oh, and The Clipper: it is ingenious.
Describe your personal sense of style.
Eclectic, to say the least. Again, I don’t have a favorite brand or design. I stick to what I like and what "feels" right to me and, of course, what I can afford.
Anything else you would like us to know?
Just that I am very thankful to have been chosen for an interview and to have me and my sets showcased. It means a lot to me. This is like my Oscar moment and, perhaps, the precursor of greater things to come. As a wife and mother, as anyone in my shoes will tell you, life is about sacrifice. This, being recognized and acknowledged for something that is all mine, is quite the accomplishment. Thank you.
