What’s your creative process on Polyvore? How do you begin creating a set?
These days I start with a room. When I find an empty room on Polyvore, I save it. Then, when it's time to sit down and start a set, I go to my empty-room file and flip through until I find something that jumps out at me. I then decide what this room looks like to me: bedroom, living room, dining room, etc. From there, I look for the most prominent item for the room: bed, sofa, dining set. The room determines the angles. The style of the prominent item determines the direction the room will go in, modern, rustic, traditional, etc. Then I start layering and filling in.
Are there any interior design professionals you are a fan of?
I watch a lot of HGTV so, yes, I have favorites from there. Sarah Richardson is my favorite. She most fits my style and aesthetic in decorating.
What are your personal aspirations/goals?
I didn't study interior design. I'm self-taught, but would love to find a place in the world where I fit into interior design in some way. I have yet to find that place, but my eyes are wide open and I'm keeping all options open.
How has Polyvore affected your life?
GAH! Polyvore has helped me to be far more accepting of my own talent. I knew I enjoyed interior design in my own home. I knew I liked what I liked, and family and friends seemed to think it was good. I came here and everyone made me feel like I had something to offer. I've made amazing friends here. I love seeing what they create and how different, but equally good, each and every set is. I found it difficult to reach out to people when I first found Polyvore. Now, I don't ever think twice about commenting on sets. This also helped me when it came to my collaboration with cb-hula. I never would have reached out to her three years ago. It didn't occur to me not to when I actually did. I usually can't wait to get to my computer in the morning to see what is going on here at Polyvore.
What is your favorite Polyvore feature?
Being able to search for items by name and color. That was a brilliant advancement. Customizing is awesome too!
Got any requests for the Polyvore team?
There have been so many upgrades in the Home side of things, so I'm pretty happy. If I have to ask for one thing, this is it: I want the ability to fill out my set name and description in draft form. We can do this with collections. I so often have something in mind, then, for whatever reason, can't publish the set yet. By the time I come back to do it, I can't remember what I was going to say. My biggest request is: there is a lot of amazing talent on Polyvore in interiors. Please keep watching them and supporting them. That is all I ask.
