Photo portfolio of Robert Campbell on 500px. Several months ago my family and I made a trip to Oak Island NC. I had been searching the internet and actually found a nice vacation home, the owner was even kind enough to allow us to stay in the home for the weekend in exchange for photos of the house to use online. While there we went and spent several hours on nearby Caswell Beach. The beach was by far one of the most beautiful and peaceful beaches I have been on. I have always wanted to try my hand at beach sunset photos, but being on the east coast, its kind of hard to do. So I decided I would get up early and try my hand at sunrise shots instead. 5am came and being the happy-go-lucky morning person I am (no really I would make you sick, I jump out of bed ready to go) I grabbed my camera bag, climbed in the van and headed for the beach. I got out on the sand, and no sun, waiting …..waiting, light, but no sun. Then I realize that it is super overcast, but hard to tell. I walk quite a ways down the beach to see if anything changes, and to my surprise it does. It begins to drizzle, so here I am about a quarter-mile from my car, camera in hand and it begins to drizzle. I’m thinking really, really, I got up early for this, so I start making my way back to the car, and it starts sprinkling. I pick up my pace, and all of a sudden I come across something else I was not expecting, a rainbow. Not just any rainbow, but a full complete rainbow coming right out of the ocean and touching down on the beach. I knew that this was a once in a lifetime thing I had in front of me and I was faced with a choice. Do I stop and grab the shot and risk the life of my camera, or keep trucking it back to the car and loose this once in a lifetime moment of beauty? I raised my camera framed in the rainbow and fired away. Sure enough almost immediately after I took the shot, what felt like a hurricane moved in over me. I ran as fast as I could to the car, which is not very fast. The rain was coming in so hard it hurt to open my eyes, It must have taken me a good ten minutes to find my way to where I had parked. What I feared would happen, did. My camera was soaked and was doing weird things till I pulled the battery out. I was very upset as I raced back to the house. I was freaking out and put in several calls to fellow photographers and got mostly the same advice, cover in rice and wait. Meanwhile my wonderful wife was calling family and trying to figure out how we were going to afford to buy another camera. Luckily the rice worked, like a charm and I am still using the camera today.
