  • Vitra Amoebe Highback Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Verner Panton, 1970. Laminated structure, foam upholstery. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using color. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. The Amoebe was originally dreamed up for Panton's Visiona installation. It is a marvelous example of close-to-the-floor lounge furniture and embodies the spirit of the early 70's. Amoebe highback has a flexible backrest that curves over the head of the sitter, forming a sculptural canopy. In this way, Amoebe highback creates a sense of shelter and seclusion - especially in large, open spaces. As one of the most influential and remarkable designers of the era, Verner Panton has created objects, spaces and art. His original, space age designs have won numerous awards and been exhibited in museums and private collections around the world. His ideaologies and design concepts are apparent and have had great influence on 21st century design. 50" h | 24.5" w | 34.5" d.

  • Herman Miller® Eames Elliptical Table
    hivemodern.com
Design Charles & Ray Eames®, 1951. Wire frame, baltic birch core, veneer or laminate top. Made by Herman Miller® "Who would say that pleasure is not useful?" -Charles Eames. Charles and Ray Eames spent many years experimenting with wire rods, work that yielded a number of breakthrough products in the 1950s. They considered many shapes for this large table introduced in 1951, but their final choice was elliptical. It reminds some of a surfboard. That's fitting, given that the Eameses enjoyed commanding views of the Pacific Ocean from their California home and studio. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the "Eames look." The wire-base tabletop cosists of seven layers of Baltic birch plywood, beveled at 20 degrees and sandwiched between high-pressure laminate in black, white or studio white. The Wire rod design base, a signature Eames look, is available in a powder-coat white, black or trivalent chrome. 89" w | 29.5" d | 10" h.

  • Carl Hansen & Son Ch25 Lounge Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Hans Wegner, 1949. Oak with hand-woven cord caning. Made in Denmark by Carl Hansen & Son. The special profile of the forelegs is probably this chair's most characteristic feature. Their unusual shape make them carry most of the user's weight and serve as a stable support for the armrests at the same time. Another interesting detail is the hind legs, which flush with the rail. The rope weaving of the seat and back form a distinctive pattern. The broad armrests add to the comfort of the chair and make it easy to get up from, even with its low seat height and reclining back. The moderate dimensions fit easily into interiors where space is a factor. The simple choice of materials give it a neutral appearance that make it blend in well. Hans J Wegner trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office in Gentofte and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers´ Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The Royal Society of Arts, London made him an 'Honorary Royal Designers for Industry' in 1959. 28.7" h | 28.7" d | 28" w | seat: 13.8" h.
