First designed in 1947, the George Nelson Bubble Lamp Collection has stood the test of time. The simple structural shapes with the innovative use of taut plastic over fine steel wire were born from George Nelson's frustration to buy a Swedish-made silk lamp which produced a soft light. This unique use of shape and material produces a diffused light that is free of glare while offering an abundance of illumination. These pieces are part of the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and remain icons in modern lighting. Modernica discovered these designs and reintroduced the series in 1989 with a dedication to reproducing these stunning, classic lights with authenticity and craftsmanship. Modernica still uses the same materials and methods to hand craft each piece in their Michigan facility. The Bubble Lamp is brought down to earth with the Cigar Lamp on a tripod stand. The brushed nickel plated steel tripod allow for the pure essence of the design to be appreciated. Each lamp comes with 90 inches of cord and an on/off switch and is available in 3 sizes.

  • George Nelson Associates Nelson Ball Wall Sconce

Architect George Nelson, who was Herman Miller’s design director from 1946 to 1972, said: “Every truly original idea seems to find its most important expression in a chair.” And then he blew the doors off lighting design. When Nelson was outfitting his office, he coveted a silk-covered Swedish hanging lamp but found it prohibitively expensive. He then recalled seeing a photo in the paper of Liberty ships being mothballed “by having the decks covered with netting and then being sprayed with a self-webbing plastic,” said Nelson. “And then, Whammo!” Inspiration struck, and by the next night, Nelson had designed his first Bubble Lamp® (1947), using a spray coating of translucent plastic polymer over a skeleton of steel wire. “When you put a light in it, it glowed.” A wide range of shapes and sizes are now available. UL Listed. Bulb (not included): incandescent 150W/120V/E26/A21 max. Made in U.S.A.

  • Half Nelson Lamp By Modernica
    2modern.com
Introducing the 'Half-Nelson' Table Lamp, a magnum opus from the innovative George Nelson Office, circa 1950. The 'Half-Nelson' Lamp is a definitive example of George Nelson’s visionary design. Stripped down to the essentials, Nelson playfully transforms a cylinder, rod, and discus into an enduring work of art. The 'Half-Nelson' Table Lamp utilizes a pivoting shade, which is adjustable both left and right, and up and down. Giving it the ability to direct light in all directions. The cylinder base is constructed of aluminum with a black line-grained anodized finish. The shade is made from spun aluminum. The top of the shade has a line-grained anodized black finish, and the underside has a power-coated, glossy satin white finish. The stem connecting the two, is made of chromed-aluminum. The on/off switch is built of machined-anodized aluminum. George Nelson originally designed the 'Half-Nelson' Table Lamp for a large-scale design project; Holiday House. Holiday House was a commissioned design vacation home for a magazine of the same name. The house was built in 1950 on the southern coast of Long Island. It was intended to showcase the magazine and to promote a post-war economy in which one could afford to own a vacation home. George Nelson designed the home and most of its furnishings. The ‘Half-Nelson’ was designed specifically for the living room, however it only remained a prototype. At a later date, Nelson reintroduced his 'Half-Nelson' design to Koch & Lowy, an American Lighting Company. Koch & Lowy put the ‘Half-Nelson’ into production in 1977. At the time it was available in three finishes: polished brass, chromed-aluminum, and white or black enamel. The lamp was in production until the mid-eighties. Since 1989, Modernica has proven its steadfast commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship. Being at the forefront of rediscovering and relaunching out-of-production pieces, Modernica still uses the same methods and materials to handcraft each lamp that were used in 1952.
