  • Mater Mango Wood Bowl Table - Extra Large
    shophorne.com
An adaptation of traditional wooden lacquer trays, this table is multifunctional and comes in a knock down form. The legs easily detach to help reduce the energy spent on transporting material from various parts of the world, and to allow the table to be used as a bowl, tray or table. The idea is inspired by objects that are simple and had multiple applications, and yet were not burdens on the planet. The shape of the mango table is derived from traditional kneading bowls that used to be lacquered in bright red, and were found extensively across south of India. The mango table has a top made from the wood of a fruit tree. It is grown and tended for, and once the productive life of the tree is over, it is cut down and another one is planted. Incidentally, mango, as a fruit is widely consumed across the country hence the wood is plentiful. It is turned manually on the lathe, showcasing the skill of the `kharaadi' or the wood turning community, thereby supporting local skills. The legs are made of mild steel, machined out of rods. The finishing is done with lead free water based PU lacquers, thereby respecting the local environment.

  • Mater Shell Bar Stool - Black Leather, Sirka Grey Oak Base
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair developed out of Michael Dreeben’s ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in north India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it’s waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs incentivize these skilled tradesmen and women by providing the artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is indebted to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it’s clean of line and emphasizes the leather forming and stitching, it’s deeply comfortable, and it’s durable like the saddles it’s derived from. Crafted from thick top-grain leather, with reasonable care, these chairs will last for decades. Frames: Sirka Grey Oak Swivel Base. Leathers: Black Leather.

  • Oscar 3 Seat Sofa by Matthew Hilton
    shophorne.com
The Oscar sofa strikes a pleasing balance between modernity and tradition, large in size yet light in appearance. The sofa is made from a European hardwood frame, jute webbing and hessian straps and then covered with a mix of materials that includes natural fibers, animal hair and wool. It features two large feather cushions that are notable for their depth, the back has a line of sewn in pulls, lending the sofa the appearance of a buttoned back, without the actual buttons. The feet are made from walnut stained beech, with the front ones being turned versions. After studying at the famous Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and working for architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, Finn Juhl set up his own design office in 1945. Later that year, Juhl and master cabinetmaker Niels Voder, collaborators since 1937, created a buzz at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with their expressive, sculptural pieces. In 1951, Juhl went on to make his stateside debut at the Good Design exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York, and he represented Denmark in designing a meeting chamber at United Nations Headquarters. The trained architect and self-taught furniture designer drew the inspiration for his Finn Juhl Credenza (1955) from the cubist movement and Goethe’s color wheel, reflected in the piece’s simple geometric shapes and interlocking planes and its sliding doors and six trays finished in varying shades of blue lacquer. The left interior has two removable pegged shelves, the right an open compartment next to the one for the trays. Holding the walnut body, the hand-burnished steel frame with wooden feet lends the piece airiness. Ships fully assembled. Made in Denmark.

  • Essey Grand Illusion Side Table - Clear
    shophorne.com
Illusion is a timeless statement of beauty, simplicity and functionality. As with so many great designs, inspiration is often derived from a story: "One day I was passing a Café in Copenhagen. There were round tables with white tablecloths. Each cloth was square and almost touched the floor. I stopped and took couple photos. I then went to a plastic workshop, showed them the image and asked if it was possible to make such an object in plastic. The answer was no. But I continued my quest and after a few months some samples were ready. The result was Illusion, a stunning example of Symbolic Functionalism that has received an extremely enthusiastic reception from both the press and consumers." John Brauer, designer. All Illusion tables are hand made and thus are slightly unique.

The Baker Sofa was created in 1951, the year that Juhl brought international recognition to Danish design with his U.S. debut in the "Good Design" exhibit in Chicago and at MoMA in New York. This was also the year when he was the architect appointed to represent Denmark in creating the interior of a meeting hall at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oh, and did we mention he had just turned 39? In looking at his Baker Sofa, we can see how Juhl was influenced by modern sculpture, like the moving mobiles created by Alexander Calder. Another recognizable Juhl characteristic is how one element appears suspended over another, with a space in between. In doing this with the back of this sofa, he gave the Baker a surprising visual lightness for a sofa of this size. (Imagine how different it would look as one solid piece.) This original is an authentic, fully licensed product of Onecollection, House of Finn Juhl™. Made in Denmark.
  • Stephen Kenn Military Canvas Sofa - Canvas & Marbled Brown Finish
    shophorne.com
Los Angeles based designer Stephen Kenn has long been inspired by clean and simple design aesthetics and the stories inherent in vintage military fabrics. In 2011 he combined those two loves by creating The Inheritance Collection. The collection was the result of an exploration of how furniture is constructed, and then a desire to distill the process down to the barest bones. Likening the process of furniture construction to the way the human body is constructed, the frame, belts, and cushions became the bones, muscles, and skin of each piece. Composed of a steel welded frame with a marbled brown finish, custom webbing belts, smooth leather straps and re-purposed WWII military fabric for the cushion covers. Each piece is unique, and carries small imperfections, hand-repaired tears, and markings from the soldiers who originally used the material. The shade of olive canvas will vary from piece to piece.

  • Isamu Noguchi Noguchi® Prismatic Table
    dwr.com
A former apprentice to Constantin Brancusi, midcentury master Isamu Noguchi was no stranger to working with metal. The aluminum Prismatic Table (1957), the last piece of furniture that Noguchi designed, is an example of his return to the medium in the 1950s, during which time he created both functional and fine arts objects out of metal sheeting. Evoking the Japanese art of origami, the table features carefully bent and folded angles that lend dimension and a sense of solidity to the design. Small but sturdy, it's a crisp and classic side or end table. This is the first time the three-legged version of the table has been produced, and is artfully manufactured by the Vitra Design Museum in collaboration with the Isamu Noguchi Foundation.

  • FontanaArte Tavolo con Ruote coffee table - Limited Edition
    lovethesign.com
The famous Tavolo con Ruote designed by Gae Aulenti in 1980 is one of the best-known, most iconic FontanaArte products, on show in a large number of museums, including the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The design idea came from how materials are moved around the production unit, where a wooden top on wheels transports the sheets of glass. An intuitive idea born out of an association of everyday tools. The table top is in 15 mm thick float glass and it rests on 4 industrial rubber wheels. The black-painted bolts are a deliberately visible feature. The 35th Anniversary of the Tavolo con Ruote (1980-2015) has been celebrated with a Limited Edition of 350 pieces. The glass top of each one is pad printed with the words FontanaArte, Tavolo con Ruote, Limited Editionë and the fork of one of the four wheels is laser etched with its serial number. The limited edition table is only available in the square 120x120 cm size and it is provided with a certificate of authenticity indicating its serial number and guaranteeing the value of the item purchased, the result of a tradition going back more than 80 years.
