  • About A Girl Monika Tischer
    More info
We head to Vancouver to catch up with art director Monika Tischer and chat about what keeps her going in the cold months, her favorite ways to unwind, and how she stays cozy. Photos by Kim A. Thomas Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I was born and raised in Penticton, a small city in the southern interior of British Columbia. After graduating from high school, I moved around a little bit, went traveling (Europe, South East Asia, a bit of Canada and the States), and finally settled in Vancouver three and a half years ago. I'm a hairdresser by trade and worked in a few different salons the first two years here, where I slowly started to realize that it wasn't what I was truly passionate about. I still cut hair from my home every once in a while, but recently had a wonderful job opportunity fall into my lap and have settled comfortably into my new role. What's your new job? How did you get started doing it? I'm an Assistant Art Director at Pixel Union, a web design company based in Victoria, BC. My boss Emma found me through Instagram/Tumblr and after licensing my photos for a theme, asked if I was interested in a position with the company. I'm now working remotely with them and often travel back and forth between Vancouver and their head office in Victoria. Above: Newu Sister Ray Overall Do you have any hobbies? If so, what are they? Aside from photography, I've always been passionate about creating things with my own two hands. I'm the type of person who will see something I like and immediately want to figure out how to make it myself. I've done mini renovation to almost every apartment I've ever lived in. A few months after I moved into my current place, I ripped apart my little studio kitchen and renovated it from the bottom up (with a budget of $300 from my landlord). I can't wait for the day I own a home and have total control, knowing it's a place I plan to stay in. I've also made most of my furniture: tables, shelving, etc. I'd love to learn how to hand carve wooden spoons/knives and spend time in an actual shop, learning to use all the proper tools. My dad is a craftsman who learned the trade in Austria before immigrating to Canada. I'm kicking myself now for not taking advantage of his woodworking knowledge and spending more time with him in his shop when I was younger. My best friend and I are also planning to take pottery classes in January which I'm really looking forward to! Above: Monika's photography from Instagram What’s a dream project for you? For a few years after I graduated high school, a friend and I would do an annual road trip down the coast to California. We would stop and explore every state we passed through, sleeping in my car the entire way. I really miss the freedom of being on the road and having absolutely no agenda. Since transit in Vancouver is so good, there’s really no need for a vehicle. I ended up selling my beloved 1988 Volvo shortly after moving here and haven’t really done any big trips since. A dream project of mine would be to go on a long road trip one summer, visiting every state and documenting the whole trip by photo. I’ve also always had dreams to flip a house. Above: Silence + Noise Harley Shirttail Turtleneck Sweater Tell us the best part about living in Vancouver. As long as you can get used to the rain, Vancouver really has everything you could ever ask for. The ability to step from the urban environment into true wilderness is definitely one of Vancouver’s biggest perks. You can be in the heart of downtown and in a short thirty minute drive, be up on a mountain in the lush forest. There’s also something really special about living near the ocean. I can’t neglect to mention the amount of amazing coffee shops and restaurants to discover here, as well as Vancouver’s music scene. Part of what I love about this city is there’s always something going on, no matter what day of the week it is. Speaking of going out, you’re always dressed so cute! Any tips for making winter layers look good? Winter in Vancouver means rain instead of snow, so it’s easy to layer up with

  • On the 60th anniversary of Christian Dior’s Rouge Dior lipstick line, Natalie Portman shares her favourite shades
    More info
See Natalie Portman's Dior lipstick shade picks » Although Christian Dior the brand is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its Rouge Dior line this year, the truth is that Christian Dior the man made his first lipstick four years earlier. He conceived it in 1949 as a sort of limited-edition gift with purchase, sending it to the most loyal clients of his Colifichet boutique on Avenue Montaigne in Paris as a Christmas present. No doubt those ladies treasured their new makeup staple, as would Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker and Grace Kelly some years later. Since then, Rouge Dior has encompassed 1,500 shades—from the first eight colours designed to match different couture outfits to the lurid ’70s brights dreamed up by former cosmetic artistic director Serge Lutens to the two newest additions: Darling (a vibrant pink) and Trafalgar (a punchy coral). The latter takes its name from Monsieur Dior’s old “Coup de Trafalgar” trick of throwing a notice-me bright red dress into a long runway
