  • Photography by Javier Lovera
    bentrovatoblog.com
Born and raised in Colombia, Javier Lovera moved to Toronto back in 2006 after just having finished his M.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering, but found himself doubting his future in engineering: "- I knew I didn't want to be an engineer but didn't know what I wanted to do. I enrolled in a couple of darkroom photography classes and absolutely fell in love with photography and design. Then my wife introduced me to the photographer Steve Carty and I apprenticed with him for a year until I was starting to get my own work, and here we are now." Now his work has featured in national and international magazines such as NUVO, ZINK, Filler, Poor But Sexy, and Contra Magazine, and in 2009, he was one of the winners of the Applied Arts Magazine Photography Annual competition in the fashion and beauty category. Javier finds inspiration in a lot of things, but says his family might be the most important source of inspiration: "- My wife and family are incredibly inspiring and energizing, and are essential to me to be able to work in this world. My wife is also my best and toughest critic, and I always bounce ideas around with her. I also find that collaboration and conversation with other visual artists always takes your ideas further. Visually and conceptually, I find inspiration in a wide arrange things: films (directors like Fellini, Kurosawa, and Kubrick), the work of other photographer's and artists, literature, graphic design, and music (specially jazz). I don't believe inspiration comes all of a sudden to you. I think you need to actively seek it, feeding yourself in a very honest way with things you find appealing. When you do that, its like a rabbit hole and you can find yourself in unexpected and exciting places." Here's some of his work: More pictures inside the post.

Pride & Prejudice is my all time favorite book, and also movie. So it’s fitting that today my Mr. Darcy proposal tea mug came in the mail this afternoon. Is it possible to be in love with a cup? Because I think that’s currently happening right now. I bought it from this lovely Jane Austen inspired etsy shop, Brookish.

  • Young Romantics by Chelsea Millunchick
    bentrovatoblog.com
Australian photographer, make up artist and blogger Chelsea Millunchick has just shot her first Ben Trovato Exclusive, called Young Romantics. The story that was shot at a beach in Half Moon Bay in California features models Brendon Beck and Nikki Winge with City Models San Francisco, who were styled by Ashley Farnaz, had hair done by Jenelle Oldham, and make up by Chelsea herself. Chelsea says this about the story: "- This story is about young romantics, and that feeling you get when you first fall in love. It's that special moment when two lovers first share this secret together and they feel as if they are the only two people alive in the world. It's a wonderful sense of freedom and invincibility. Love is full of happy, quiet and intimate moments and it was important for me to capture all of these emotions. To emphasize the lover's seclusion, we shot at a wonderful deserted beach in Half Moon Bay, California. We worked as an amazing team who understood and appreciated the concept so it was carried out quite beautifully." She's currently based out of San Francisco, and has had her work featured in publications such as VECU magazine and Cellardoor magazine, before today making her debut on Ben Trovato. Greatly inspired by nature and the timeless beauty of women, she loves to photograph girls in a more natural and genuine state: "- It's so the viewer can feel an authentic connection with the model. There is something magical about the elegance and vulnerability of a woman, and I like to capture those more intimate moments that inspire a story." Chelsea is a make up artist by trade, and has been working with fashion photographers for the past 5 years: "- Working alongside talented photographers inspired me to become part of the bigger picture and I felt the need to create my own images and concepts. Then about 8 months ago, I started to photograph models and I absolutely love it." Here's Young Romantics by Chelsea Millunchick, for Ben Trovato: Credits Photography - Chelsea Millunchick Make up - Chelsea Millunchick Hair - Jenelle Oldham Styling - Ashley Farnaz Models - Brendon Beck & Nikki Winge @ City Models San Francisco Full story inside post.

  • 100 Years of Fashion Illustration (PB)
    momastore.org
By Cally Blackman. A visual feast of 400 dazzling images, this is a comprehensive survey of the genre over the last century. The book also offers an overview of the development of fashion, as seen through the eyes of the greatest illustrators of the day. Early in the century fashion illustration reflected new, liberating currents in art and culture, such as the exoticism of the Ballets Russes, while the postwar period saw inspiration from the great Parisian couturiers. After the dominance of the celebrity fashion photographer in the '60s, a new generation of illustrators emerged, embracing the medium of the computer, while many returned to more traditional techniques.
