34. My Neighbor Totoro

Country: Japan
Directed by: Hayao Miyazaki

Plot: When two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, they have adventures with the wonderous forest spirits who live nearby.

My Neighbor Totoro is such adorable movie...that can be seen differently by children and by adults.

It's a story about two girls who meet Totoro, spirit of forest and have magical adventures with the creature. Totoro is symbol of children's imagination, and the movie is about the power of child's pure and innocent imagination:)

The movie is incredibly...relaxing. You watch their adventures, see adorable creatures of forest, and when it's over you want more.

But looking from a perspective of an adult, this movie has hidden meaning...It's the scene with a sandal left by the pond. It's not explained who lost it but...it really can be Mei's,and Totoro is god of death. Satsuke can enter cat bus and find her sister...after suicide. And their mother can see them sitting on tree because she's on verge of dying.

But this is only one of many ways to see this movie. I prefer seeing it as magical fantasy story about forest spirits:)

Visually beautiful, My Neighbor Totoro is ideal movie for everyone from small children to adults!
