Fashionistas in the know have long tracking Nicola Formichetti’s rise. Since he became creative director at MUGLER two years ago, he’s led a complete overhaul of the brand’s look, and when Lady Gaga needs a stylist, Formichetti's the one she calls.
Formichetti is our newest guest editor (enter his contest for a trip to Paris Fashion Week!), and we got to chat with him about what it’s really like to work with Lady Gaga, and what the designer has in store for us next.
On modernizing Mugler without losing its soul, or its iconic fragrances:
"Being creative director at Mugler, a historical fashion god, we had the chance to explore the archives and get inspired by the vocabulary of Mister Mugler. I haven’t yet been part of creating scents…but it’s like reworking a classic scent in a way when we update and rework the Mugler DNA.
There is a sense of strong modernity about Mugler, in the scent as in the clothes. It‘s about people who are confident with a strong image, power and modernity. Mugler is about having no frontiers, geographically but also creatively. It’s an open world of possibilities."
On collaborating with Lady Gaga:
"Ever since we met at a shoot for V Magazine, we’ve kept working together on the most crazy projects, and there’s much more to come! Working with Lady Gaga is a constantly updated collaboration. We share ideas and visuals and combine different elements to create something unexpected. It’s like two creative friends working together! So what to expect from us next? Everything!"
