  • Shin and Tomoko Azumi LEM Piston Stool with Lacquered Wood Seat
    dwr.com
Shin and Tomoko Azumi have brought innovation to a range of products, from subwoofer speakers to salt and pepper shakers to their LEM Piston Stool (2000). Named Product of the Year at the FX International Interior Design Awards in the year of its release, the often copied LEM Piston Stool reveals a rigorous and original rethinking of the form and function of seating. The sculptural seat not only swivels but also adjusts easily from counter height to bar height with a lever that activates a gas cylinder. While utility strongly determines its form, this unique stool also has a visual lightness that creates the illusion of freedom from gravity. After designing the LEM Piston Stool, Shin and Tomoko Azumi dissolved their partnership to start solo practices, and they both still develop furniture, lighting and interiors for clients worldwide. LEM is included in the permanent collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Made in Italy.

  • Eero Saarinen Saarinen Tulip Stool
    dwr.com
Eero Saarinen called himself a “form giver,” and everything he designed – from the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to his Womb™ Chair to his Pedestal Table – had a strong sculptural quality. “The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world,” said Saarinen. In a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, he announced that he was designing a collection to “clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home.” Later that year, he completed his Pedestal Table and Tulip Chair Collection (1956) with its cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. The compact and comfortable Tulip Stool has a swivel seat with padded cushion. Each stool is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Eero Saarinen’s signature. This is the authentic Tulip Collection produced by Knoll. Made in Italy. The Tulip Collection is Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certified®.
  • Mater Shell Bar Stool - Black Leather, Sirka Grey Oak Base
    shophorne.com
The Shell Chair developed out of Michael Dreeben’s ongoing interest in traditional craft practices in north India - in this case saddle making. Exquisitely made saddles have been produced in India for centuries, and although some horse culture persists, it’s waning as India becomes more technologically developed. The Shell Chairs incentivize these skilled tradesmen and women by providing the artisans with a new market for their craft, and hopefully encouraging them to pass it on to younger generations. The shape of the chair is indebted to Scandinavian design of the mid-twentieth century and embraces some of its core values: it’s clean of line and emphasizes the leather forming and stitching, it’s deeply comfortable, and it’s durable like the saddles it’s derived from. Crafted from thick top-grain leather, with reasonable care, these chairs will last for decades. Frames: Sirka Grey Oak Swivel Base. Leathers: Black Leather.
  • Niels Otto Møller Moller Model 80A Stool with Natural Woven Seat
    dwr.com
In 1944, Niels Otto Møller began his cabinetry company, where old craft traditions, like the hand-woven seat on the Model 80A Stool (1963), are still used today. Danish cord seats are known for their durability – easily withstanding decades of frequent use – and the strength of this material made it a smart substitute for tires when rubber was in short supply during WWII. What’s amazing about that history is that Danish cord is made of tightly twisted paper. Being a natural material, Danish cord is very pleasant to sit on and the way that it’s woven provides lasting comfort. Thirty years after he founded his company, Niels Otto Møller began exporting his chairs to Japan, which remains one of its biggest markets due to the simplicity and quality of the design and craftsmanship. Møllers is still a small family-owned business and is now managaged by Niels’ son, Jørgen Henrik Møller. This Stool is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. The seat is woven by hand from one continuous 498-foot-long piece of cord. To make the frames, the company selects the raw wood themselves from environmentally friendly areas. Machines are never used for the final polish, as these devices treat all wood the same and can’t replicate the finish that comes from polishing by hand.

Young plantation-grown teak trees are routinely cleared to make room for higher-yield trees. Rama Watana designed his solid Teak Stool (2008) as a vehicle for this underappreciated sustainable material, which is simply too thin to be used in standard furniture manufacturing. Because of its simple shape, the rustic yet refined Teak Stool can be used alone as a seat or side table, or it can be grouped in multiples for use as a coffee table. Like all teak, it will develop a rich, silvery patina over time, or it can be treated with teak oil to maintain its original luster. Suitable for indoor use only. Made in Thailand.
