Yesterday, my grandma (who I have not seen in four years) visited me at school. My sister in law brought her out so that we could all have lunch. I took them to a teeny tiny Italian restaurant. My grandma is a fantastic cook and usually won't eat Italian food out. She always says that food prepared by other people doesn't taste as good to her. But at this place, she loved the menu! She wanted to order everything! I was proud to pick a place that she liked and it was a lovely afternoon with my family.
After that, I had my independent study on Shakespeare and Classical Theater monologues. This is what I would really like to do in my career so its important to me to have lots of great audition pieces for this kind of work. I told my professor how I just had the most lovely time with my grandma and he invited her to watch our Hamlet rehearsal that evening. It was so nice of him!
My roommate and I take this independent study together. We had the most wonderful working session with our professor. In the beginning of the semester, I chose a Hero piece from "Much Ado About Nothing" by William Shakespeare. I have been working on that piece quite a lot in addition to working on my Hamlet roles. My professor had assigned me a new piece two weeks ago: Hellena from "The Rover" by Aphra Behn. I love the character so much. I have had so much fun doing my character analysis on her. I didn't have that one memorized and on its feet yet which my professor said was perfectly alright because he knew that I was busy.
He let me use my roommate as the character Ursula and set up the most interesting modernized version of the monologue, setting it up to take place in a coffee shop. I know that my work is always best with my roommate and my professor agreed. When I finished my piece. He said that it was really lovely. He said he heard me use my voice in a way that he hadn't before and that's a very big compliment! He always says that my voice needs variety.
It was such a lovely session. My grandma and my dad did come watch our rehearsal and they said they loved it. It was an absolutely wonderful day!
