NYFW Exclusive: History, Romance and Paint at Candela

Candela designer Gabriela Perezutti may live in New York now, but she’s always stayed true to her Uruguayan roots, incorporating cherished elements of Uruguay’s cultural heritage and her own family history into every collection.
Her exuberantly romantic fall 2013 line was a graceful admixture of personal imagery and artistic homage, and we were lucky enough to chat with her about it!
“There’s always a little bit of my family in every collection,” Gabriela told us. “This season, I reimagined the embellishment on one of my father’s ponchos, and you’ll also see that there’s a lot of Pampa embroidery in this collection, which is something I grew up with.”
Gabriela also took her inspiration for the presentation’s setting from a favorite influence—Uruguayan artist Julio Alpuy. “Romance is always a part of my collections,” she explained, “and this season I was thinking about the romance of women as muses, inspiring artists like Alpuy. That’s why I wanted the presentation space to look like an atelier—to have that look and feel of an artist’s studio.”
