  • Design House Stockholm Bjork Pouf/Stool
    shophorne.com
The Bjork series and its patterned structure offer a modern and enriched textile quality that is beautifully paired with stylish leather detailing. The designer, Lena Bergstrom's, conviction is that the flat textile surface of a rug is just as natural in the home as stone and wood: "The [pouf] is a natural part of the Björk collection, just like the stumps in a birch forest. They are a piece of furniture that is light and soft in its expression." For the Bjork pouf, Lena has drawn inspiration from the rough black and white graphical structure of the birch tree's trunk. The color tones of Bjork create a marbled effect through a warp of cotton intertwined with a weft in wool, known not only for its softness, but also for its in-built resistance to dirt.

German designer Theresa Arns was experimenting with ways of combining a table and storage when she stumbled upon the idea of a lid that opens by rotating it around one of the legs. The result is elegant, unpretentious and utterly addictive (show it to guests and they will be opening and shutting Turning Table for hours). “My design is quite functional,” says Theresa. “But I also think it’s important that the objects we surround ourselves with have a warm and poetic part.”
  • Modernica Shell Side Chair - Dowel Base
    shophorne.com
The Case Study Fiberglass Dowel Chair is an essential for the modern home and with so many options—it is possible to create your own one-of-a-kind chair. The shell is available in a myriad of colors. Choose your wire-frame in either zinc-plated steel or black powder-coated steel, and finish your design by choosing either solid maple dowels or solid walnut dowels. Easily one of the most important and recognizable designs of the twentieth century. The Fiberglass Shell Chairs were originally designed in 1948, as an entry in The Museum of Modern Art’s International Design Competition. At the time, no one could possibly have anticipated the massive success and longevity of this iconoclastic design. In the early fifties, fiberglass was considered an ultra-high tech material. Produced with a mixture of resin and glass fibers, it was lightweight, yet heavy-duty. Initial development and production was through Zenith Plastics—early pioneers of developing fiberglass for household and military applications. As for the chair bases, they were cleverly designed to provide a number of leg options that would be interchangeable within and between the arm shell and the side shell. The shell chairs were first available in the spring of 1950. The first runs of the chairs were produced in only three colors; griege, elephant-hide gray, and parchment—all of which had interesting translucent qualities. The chairs were distributed until 1983. In 2000, Modernica revived this potentially lost art of high-pressure, molded fiberglass. Modernica creates each shell, by hand, one-by-one, in our Los Angeles factory—just as they had been designed, developed, and produced in Southern California in the 1950s. Modernica uses all of the original presses and specialized equipment obtained from Century Plastics. To ensure authenticity of production, the initial shell chair production was overseen by Sol Fingerhut and Irv Green, the same team employed over sixty years ago to develop the original technology. Modernica creates each chair with the charge of adhering to the original tactile qualities, texture, and characteristics that alone are unique to the fiberglass shell chair. Our historic equipment has created thousands of chairs for three generations of chair lovers — and everyday Modernica continues to produce beautiful chairs for upcoming generations. Choose from a wide range of shell colors and chair base options. Modernica offers the flexibility to build a chair to suit your individual style and needs. Please note that due to the nature of fiberglass, some "hairs" may vary in darkness and color due to the singeing/burning process used to create the seat. These fibers add to the uniqueness of each chair. Handcrafted in Los Angeles, U.S.A.

In 2009, Peter Shire and the Modernica Studio teamed up and designed the Prince Charles Base. The Artek 10-Unit System is composed of 10 identical L shaped units that are put together in a certain manner to create a piece of modern and decorative furniture. When a bit of change is desired, the 10 L shaped units can be rearranged to create a chair, table base, stool, bench and more. By simply adding more L shaped units the possibilities become endless. The 10-Unit System really lives up to the motto “One Chair is enough” because of all the variations that can be achieved with just one chair. The 10-unit system is made of an environmentally friendly wood-plastic composite – ProFi – which is manufactured by UPM from their surplus adhesive label stock. The basic 10-Unit System becomes a chair, stool, or the base for a table. A bench is the combination of 2 or more 10-Unit Systems. The 10-Unit System is available in Black or White.

We love the clever thinking behind Corner Shelf, the brainchild of Stockholm designer Kyuhyung Cho. When we write on paper, says Kyuhyung, we start from the left, allowing us to structure our words. Now he has applied that principle to shelving: “The corner is a natural starting point to organise our thoughts and also our objects.” The larger corner forms a base shelf, with the medium and small elements creating dividers. Endlessly versatile, use Corners on a desk, fix to a wall or simply place in the corner of the room. See Also: Corner Shelf Medium , Corner Shelf Small.

  • Normann Copenhagen Knot Chair
    shophorne.com
The Japanese designer Tatsuo Kuroda has created a chair for Normann Copenhagen which unites classic materials with modern aesthetics. The Knot chair has a clean and simple expression that leads the thoughts to classic 1950s furniture. The overall impression is determined by the details, such as the dominant jointing points in natural paper cord, which also provide optimal sitting comfort. Tatsuo Kuroda is a graduate of Tama Art University in Japan and has worked with product and furniture design since 2006. The structural components of the Knot chair are tied together with paper cord, which provide both support and a stylish visual expression; and, despite his Japanese background, Tatsuo has been inspired by traditional Scandinavian design. Tatsuo Kuroda explains: “My thoughts behind Knot was to create a chair which is a reinterpretation of itself - a chair that is both classic and modern at the same time. I am inspired by Danish design classics in which function and aesthetics come together." The Knot chair has all of the characteristics we expect of a chair, but with a modern Scandinavian look characterized by workmanship working hand in hand with good sitting features. The result is comfort for both body and eye.

Ilimari Tapiovaara was committed to designing furniture for a much broader market. His goal was to produce quality inexpensive furniture that was made from materials that were readily available in Finland. The rustic simplicity and smaller structure made the Pirkka Collection very popular for use in the smaller homes in the post war era of the 1950s. The Pirkka Collection is made of solid wood with simple, clean lines which make for stylish functionality. The wood is joined together using no screws making it remarkably lightweight. The rustic table is carries with it the aesthetic appeal of modern design even 50 years later. The table is available in a variety of lengths making it ideal for several different locations. The bench can be paired with the table or used as a stand lone piece. The wider than usual width makes it a comfortable seat. The side chair also pairs well with the table but can stand on its own and the stool completes the set and is available in 4 heights to make it even more versatile. The seats and table top are stained pine with a black lacquered solid birch frame.
