  • Featured Brand Polk Audio
    blog.urbanoutfitters.com
Back in 1971, Matthew Polk, George Klopfer, and Sandy Gross were friends and college classmates that shared a love for physics, engineering, and music. They teamed up to build a sound system for a local bluegrass music convention, but after they discovered there weren't enough funds to pay them, they decided to design and attach a logo to the system. Polk Audio was born. Soon after this, the three decided to combine their passions and began building prototypes of speakers out of their Baltimore home until they came up with a great sounding loudspeaker. Forty years later, they continue this tradition and still employ many of the same people that helped the company get started. We're excited to have a handful of their amazing speakers and headphones at UO and dug into the company's history and products to learn more about what sets them apart. Polk's process starts with figuring out how optimal sound quality can come together with good design. “You can’t create a product that looks good, but sounds bad or vice versa,' Polk says. 'You need the best of both worlds. It can be difficult, but it always lends itself to better looking and sounding product.” It also means keeping up with trends and demands of technology. For example, many of their products, such as the Hampden Desktop Speakers, offer wireless Bluetooth capabilities so you aren’t tangled up with wires. You can also use a feature on the speakers to create a playlist to listen to with three of your friends using your phones (...no more arguing over what song comes next). Streaming is where Polk sees the future of audio going, bringing 'more music to more places more conveniently than ever before.” With this in mind, their products include a built-in digital-to-analog converter that allow music to play the way it’s meant to be heard. The Polk Tsx110b Bookshelf Speakers are small but have a lot of power. And depending on the space you want to use them in, you can separate the speakers and place them in two different spots, or stack them to create one space-saving speaker. Their headphones offer stylish and modern design features. The Hinge and Buckle over-ear headphones are made out of lightweight aluminum and vegan leather, and along with being foldable, they make for a light headphone perfect to travel with. The built in three button switch and microphone lets you control volume and play with ease. The plush over-ear pads and pivoting ear cups help to comfortable conform to your head. For listening experience, both pairs offer Polk's Optimized Electro-acoustic tuning for superior sound, and passive sound isolation technology to lower outside noise. Since its inception 40 years ago, the demand for high quality audio has stayed the same. However, the need for more convenience in how audio is delivered has grown with the technological advancements of the past few decades. Their focus on sound quality and ease of use over modern bells and whistles has helped Polk stay ahead and deliver an effortless listening experience. Shop Polk Audio
