Original Vintage French Mossant Hat Ad Poster
This is an original vintage advertising lithograph poster on linen. The Mossant Hat Company ran a successful advertising campaign in 1938. This poster with three stylish hats held up with gloved hands was the recognisable face of the promotion . Purchased this and the Disques Radio-Tele poster at a vintage poster show in New York City about 30 years ago. It has an archival linen backing and is framed with plexiglass instead of glass - which would have made the piece impossibly heavy due to its size. This is a show-stopping piece! CONDITION :: Overall condition is excellent. The framed plexiglass may have a few minor scuffs - nothing significant. SIZE :: The poster itself is approximately 47" x 63" FRAMED SIZE :: 49" x 65" x 2" AVAILABILITY:: RARE PRINTER :: EDIMO /PARIS DATE OF MANUFACTURE :: 1938 ARTIST :: LEONETTO CAPPIELLO ( 1875- 1942) celebrated poster/graphic artist STYLE :: ART DECO ORIGIN :: FRANCE

  • Original French Art Deco Period Poster by Paul Colin 1928
    chairish.com
Original French Art Deco Period Poster by Paul Colin 1928
This is an original French Art Deco Period advertising poster 'Marguerite Valmond' by Paul Colin printed by H. Chachoin. Made famous in 1928, spectacular and exquisitely made. This large colored lithograph features a detailed, chanteuse in a wistful mood. Among the most elusive of Colin's portraits of performers, this is also one of his best-a sensitive study. The poster was run off with the name misspelled "Valmont"; instead of reprinting it, Chachoin ran off a quantity of "D"s and pasted them on. The color is slightly mismatched-the interest value only enhanced. Here, the poster is offered with "D,". This is a magnificent large, French Art Deco period poster by the artist Paul Colin who worked for over forty years in the theatre, creating not only posters but also numerous sets and costumes. Creator: Paul Colin (Artist) Of the Period: Art Deco Place of origin: France Date of Manufacture: 1928 Period: Early 20th Century Condition: Excellent. This is a lithograph in color printed on paper professional framed. It is very good condition as seen in the detail images. Wear: Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Measurements: Framed 67" tall X 50" Wide x 1" deep unframed 62 1/2" tall x 46. 1/2" wide Artist Biography Paul Colin was one of France’s greatest poster artists, best known for creating over 1,400 posters for the Revue Nègre, as well as numerous sets and costumes. A student of Eugène Vallin and of Victor Prouvé, he is considered a master of the modern school of poster art. His style is highly personal and impossible to categorize. The evocative force of his posters for grand causes marks him as a master of visual communication and his work remains relevant and fresh today. Paul Colin was born in 1892 in Nancy, France. As a teenager, Paul Colin apprenticed at a printing house before enrolling at L’École des Beaux-Arts, and he would later work in the company of Eugène Vallin. He was commended for his masterful integration of organic and figural subjects with geometric forms. His style, which was influenced by both Cubism and Surrealism, frequently employed bold shapes, striking colours, caricature, and highly stylised forms. When still an aspiring artist, Paul Colin was commissioned by a friend at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees to design a poster publicizing La Revue Nègre, starring Josephine Baker. Josephine Baker accepted Colin's invitation to come to his studio to pose for the poster. Paul Colin and Josephine Baker became lovers and life-long friends. Their relationship was fortuitous for both, leading to a very successful artistic career for Colin, and introducing Baker through Colin to Paris' artistic elite. Colin also designed some film sets in the 1930s, including for Fritz Lang's Carnet le Bal (1937). Paul Colin died in 1985 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Patrice Molinard was a French director and actor who also pursued photography. He was the stills photographer for George Franju's documentary 'Le Sang des Betes' or 'Blood of the Beasts', which focuses on Parisian slaughterhouses. Molinard's photographs appear in several books including 'Paris Insolite', a collection of writings from the author's experiences and observations as a tramp in 1940s Paris. Maurice Jardot's 'Chateaux de la Loire' contains photographs by Patrice Moliard and Pierre Jahan. Here is an excerpt from page XV: "One is hardly aware today how much the monuments of the Loire Valley contribute to the charm and poetry of the countryside, but it is certain that the pleasant climate, the beautiful landscape, the subtle atmosphere would not be so highly praised were it not for the fascinating buildings rising from this soil, enriching a hospitable nature with the radiance which always attaches to exceptional people and the things they have created. Nature here owes much to man (Translation provided through brainiacbooks)." • Original 1981 Robert Delaunay Poster
    chairish.com
    Original 1981 Robert Delaunay Poster
Robert Delaunay Poster, Tour de Laon, Centre Georges Pompidou Date: 1981 Size: 19.5 x 27.5 inches Notes: Poster, unlined Artist: Delaunay, Robert About the Poster: Robert Delaunay is best recognized for spearheading Orphism alongside his wife Sonia Delaunay (herself an accomplished artist, textile design, and stage set design) amongst others. Orphism is the art movement that bridged Cubism to Abstract art; it injected colour into an otherwise monochromatic art scene, was seen as more lyrical than the cold geometric blocs that preceded it, and aimed to convey meaning through the form of colour. Delaunay also promoted the idea of simultanism (the existence of an infinitude of interrelated states of being), a concept he integrated into his paintings. This poster is for an exhibition of Robert Delaunay's work at Centre Georges Pompidou, a Parisian museum named after the French president who commissioned the building. The advertisement features Delaunay's 1912 painting 'Les Tours de Laon,' itself a representation of Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Laon. Poster is in great condition and will look wonderful when framed!

1913 French Art Deco Car Poster, Gamy
Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries.Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed 'M. Montaut', she also used the name 'Gamy', an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labor intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. This poster is labeled: "The Dedalia Car, first prize winner at the 1913 ACF Grand Prix for Cycle Cars." It's in excellent condition.

Date: 1950 Size: 9.5 x 13 inches (image), 16.25 x 19.25 inches (framed) Artist: Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri (after) From a catalog raisonne printed in 1950 by the prestigious Ateliers Mourlot in Paris. Henri de Toulouse Lautrec was slight in stature, incredibly off-beat in nature, and prodigiously talented in production of lithographs, paintings, posters and other artworks. Within less than 40 years (b. 1864- d. 1901), Lautrec created an unforgettable body of work that continues to inspire, to confound, and to captivate collectors the world over. His immersion in the colourful and theatrical life of the fin de siecle Paris yielded an oeuvre of exciting, elegant, and provocative images of the modern and sometimes decadent life of those times. Toulouse-Lautrec is known as one the greatest artists of the post-impressionist period. In a 2005 auction at Christie's auction house, a new record was set when "La Blanchisseuse", an early painting of a young laundress, sold for $22.4 million U.S.

Cassandre received his first commission for a large poster from the Paris furniture store Au Bucheron in 1923. He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. Cassandre designed posters in a stringently constructive formal language that pays obvious tribute to the power of the machine and shows influences of Cubism and other Art Deco artists who were working in Paris at the time. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 Cassandre lived in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 Cassandre returned to Paris, were he continued to work as a graphic designer. In 1963 Cassandre designed the Yves Saint Laurent monogram. His private life was hectic and often unhappy. He had unsuccessfully attempted suicide before his final successful attempt in 1968. This poster was commissioned by Fortune Magazine and was one of the first commissions produced by Cassandre specifically for the American market. The work illustrates the style for which Cassandre is best known - clean, precise and never using more detail than is necessary.

Le Rallic French Horse Racing Posters - Pair
From an early age, Etienne Marie Lucien (also known as Le Rallic) (1891–1968) was passionate about drawing. As a minor, he moved to Paris to pursue his dreams and develop his skills in such recognized and respected magazines as Le Rire, Le Petit Illustre Amusant, etc. Gustave Blanchot (also known as Gus Bofa), a fellow young aspiring artist, helped Le Rallic discover his artist's name and create his signature. In 1912, he left his pencil and paper to enroll in the military, joining The Cavalry School in Saumur. It was there that he discovered his love of horses, an animal which would figure prominently in his post-war works (the earliest ones being drawings of horses for army publications). It is said that his admiration and respect for the noble beast translated into his drawings of them, which are often highly detailed, dynamic, colorful images. This set of two horizontal pochoirs (a stencil technique) are in excellent condition. Unlined, they are beautifully colored action-packed scenes which would look beautiful framed.

1930 Art Deco Reuter - Achilles Mauzan Poster
Renowned Italian poster artist Luciano Achille Mauzan (1881 – 1952) transformed viewers into buyers with bold, humorous advertisements. An illustrator who was also versed in a variety of art forms, Mauzan created over 2,000 product, event and war posters during the Golden Era of Posters. Mauzan's posters are considered highly collectible, increasingly difficult to find, and spectacular. Born on the French Riviera, Mauzan moved to Italy in 1905. He was known as a decorative illustrator designing during the Art Deco movement, though he also painted and sculpted. After a period of study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, France, Mauzan divided his life between Milan, Paris and Buenos Aires. Between 1920 and 1940, the period between the wars, he used forms and materials under the influence of the avant-garde cubists. He was also an illustrator of posters and postcards. During his career as a poster printer and designer, Mauzan designed over 2,000 posters, using a style known for humour and brilliant colours in advertisements and events in over 1,000 postcard images. This poster has some minor creasing but is otherwise in great condition and is linen backed.

He attended the Académie de la Grand Chaumière and in 1931 he enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. RObert Humblot later began traveling to further improve himself but this was halted by war and Robert Humblot enlisted whereby he operated field telephones. After the war, he returned to Paris and did an exhibition to showcase his work. His later years consisted mostly of traveling and continuing to showcase his works until his death in 1962. 1906 Vintage French Biscotines Poster
Date: 1906 Artist: Leonetto Cappiello Large linen backed poster. About The Poster: This poster for Union biscuits (a two-times winner at the 1905 and 1906 World Fairs!) was designed by Leonetto Cappiello in 1906. Union bakery was founded in 1892 in an effort to combat the terrible living conditions of the working class, offering bread at a competitive price (free to members or even the poorest). It remained under the Union name until 1993, when it was bought out by Leroux. About the Artist: Cappiello is considered to be one of the greatest posterists of his age. Cappiello's approach was always image association - the idea that you don't really remember the image of the product itself, but the image of something is associated with the product ... Cappiello was the first who thoroughly understood this, and he applied it with considerable diligence in about a thousand posters.'(Rennert) Born and raised in Livorno, Italy, Cappiello knew at a young age that he would be an artist. In his youth, Cappiello drew caricatures and sketches, which proved he had a natural talent and an ambition that would eventually lead him to Paris in pursuit of his dream. Encouraged by his brother who was living in Paris at the time, Cappiello endeavored to sell his caricatures to magazines that would pay and support his art. He was so ambitious that he even approached Giacomo Puccini, the composer to ask if he could sketch him. He was successful and managed to submit the images to Le Rire magazine. Soon after, Cappiello became a sought after cartoonist and caricaturist. His style, simple lines with strong colors and an equally strong product message was evident in some of the first commissions he received: an 1899 album of pochoirs depicting famous actresses of the age shows clearly that even as a young man Cappiello had already developed a style which he would use, with incredible results, throughout his creative life. Cappiello's portraits and posters were playful and unique, a quality that bred his success. His illustrations were clean and simple, crossing the boundaries from Belle Epoque through to Art Noveau to the more modernist approach of Art Deco while still combining styles from previous eras. Because of the simplicity of his graphics, Cappiello was able to produce nearly 1000 posters in his time and was an inspiration to many lithographers to follow. His work is sought after today and may be found in galleries and museums throughout the world. 'In Cappiello's later years, caricature, now more polished and refined, makes an appearance every now and again.

1979 French Poster, Steinberg Galerie Maeght
Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was one of America’s most beloved artists, renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades and for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Steinberg’s art, equally at home on magazine pages and gallery walls, cannot be confined to a single category or movement. He was a modernist without portfolio, constantly crossing boundaries into uncharted visual territory. In View of the World from 9th Avenue, his famous 1976 New Yorker cover, a map delineates not real space but the mental geography of Manhattanites. In other Steinbergian transitions, fingerprints become mug shots or landscapes; graph or ledger paper doubles as the facade of an office building; words, numbers, and punctuation marks come to life as messengers of doubt, fear, or exuberance; sheet music lines glide into violin strings, record grooves, the grain of a wood table, and the smile of a cat. Through such shifts of meaning from one passage to the next, Steinberg's line comments on its own transformative nature. In a deceptively simple 1948 drawing, an artist (Steinberg himself) traces a large spiral. But as the spiral moves downward, it metamorphoses into a left foot, then a right foot, then the profile of a body, until finally reaching the hand holding the pen that draws the line. This emblem of a draftsman in the act of generating himself and his line epitomizes a fundamental principle of Saul Steinberg’s work: his art is about the ways artists make art. Steinberg did not represent what he saw; rather, he depicted people, places, and even numbers or words in styles borrowed from other art, high and low, past and present. In his pictorial imagination, the very artifice of style, of images already processed through art, became the means to explore social and political systems, human foibles, geography, architecture, language and, of course, art itself. (http://www.saulsteinbergfoundation.org/life_work.html) Poster was printed by Maeght, one of the foremost Parisian printers of the time. Piece is in excellent condition, unlined, and recently purchased from a private collection in Europe.

He designed hundreds of posters - many of them, like this one, classics in the language of Art Deco design and decor. A.M. Cassandre also developed typefaces and taught at the École des Arts Décoratifs. He had his own art school until 1935. Between 1936 and 1939 A.M.Cassandre lived in in New York, where he freelanced as a commercial artist. In 1939 A.M. Edouard Pignong Original French Exhibition Poster
According to the British newspaper The Independent "Edouard Pignon was one of France's foremost painters, and followed the classic path of the French autodidact intellectual. Born in 1905, the son of a militant miner in Bully-les-Mines, Pignon's humble origins stood him in good stead at the height of the French Communist Party's prestige in the 1950s. He left his village for Paris in 1927, and worked in the Renault and Citroen car factories, attending evening classes at the Universite Ouvriere in painting and sculpture. In 1931, when the effects of the Wall Street Crash were taking their toll on the French art market and depression loomed, he joined the Association des Ecrivains et des Artistes Revolutionnaires." His work often reflected his deeply held political views. Sadly, during his very last years Pignon lost his sight, the greatest of tragedies for an artist. As The Independent noted "A particular chapter of the history of French painting closes with his death." This exhibition poster is in excellent condition and was printed in Paris by the famed printer Mourlot. Date: 1981 Size: 16 x 22.5 inches Notes: Poster Artist: Pignon, Edouard
