Since the 1960´s, the versatile Mario Bellini has been celebrated for his distinctive designs in architecture, master planning, interiors, furnishings, and industrial design. In 1998 he designed the Bellini Chair for Heller, which won the coveted Compasso d´Oro in 2001. Bellini´s designs are often created by molding clay into muscular forms. Bellini has said that designing a chair is "infinitely more complex than designing a skyscraper". "Tell me what chair you've designed and tell you what sort of architect you are."--Mario Bellini. • Irving Harper and George Nelson Nelson Marshmallow Sofa in Vinyl
    dwr.com
If only all design "failures" were so successful. The inspiration for the Nelson Marshmallow Sofa (1956) was launched when an inventor approached George Nelson and Irving Harper with a planned "self-skinned" injection plastic disc that would be inexpensive to produce and unerringly durable. As the proposed cushions had a maximum diameter of 12", the designers perched 18 of them atop a steel frame. Sadly, the inventor's vision for high-resiliency, low-cost cushions never came to fruition, but the design was so compelling that Herman Miller chose to produce it anyway. Designed with both residential and commercial applications in mind, the cushions are detachable for easy cleaning and therefore interchangeable to equalize wear. The atom-like appearance of the Marshmallow Sofa is a precursor to the aesthetic style of the pop art of the 1960s. This original is an authentic, fully licensed products of Herman Miller, Inc. Nelson is a trademark of Herman Miller, Inc. Made in U.S.A.

  • Verpan Fun 1 DA Pendant Light
    design55online.co.uk
A triumph of Pop Art, the coveted Verpan Fun series of lamps caused a furore when the prototype was first exhibited at the Cologne Furniture Fair. Designed by Denmark’s legendary Verner Panton in 1964 this beautiful and revolutionary pendant lamp ingeniously marries the sequin dress with a disco ball. Draped with cascading metal discs linked by metal rings and sequenced with varying lengths of chain, the Fun 1DA utilises the natural flow of air drawn up by the warm bulb to gently oscillate the linked metal discs, which then scintillate with light and gently tinkle as they touch. Not to be confused with the host of inferior imitations they have spawned, the Fun series of lamps are constructed by craftsmen from top quality materials. This lamp comprises a three ringed structure mounted on a chrome ceiling canopy, suspended from a tasteful black fabric cord. Although this classic design has never gone away, it recently re-emerged centre-stage after being photographed in designer Peter Saville’s Mayfair apartment. Playful, optimistic, exotic – and fun with a capital F – it is beautiful, useful and increasingly collectable. Dimensions: Diameter: 45 cm. Height: 60 cm. Cord: 400 cm. Bulb: E27 E26) max. 75W.

Design Florence Knoll, 1954. Steel frame, glass, wood veneer, granite or marble top. Made in Italy by Knoll. Like so many of her groundbreaking designs that became the gold standard for the industry, the 1961 executive collection, including the coffee and end tables, made there way into the pantheon of modern classics. Florence Knoll's designs are reserved and cool, severe and angular, reflecting the objective perfectionism of the early 1960s. While a student on the campus of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Florence Knoll Bassett became a protegée of Eero Saarinen. She worked briefly for Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer and Wallace K. Harrison. In 1946, she married Hans Knoll, after which they formed Knoll Associates. As a pioneer of the Knoll Planning Unit, she revolutionized interior space planning with her belief in "total design" - embracing all aspects of design principles which were radical departures from the standard practice in the 1950s, but were quickly adopted and remain widely used today. For her extraordinary contributions to architecture and design, Florence Knoll was accorded the National Endowment for the Arts' prestigious 2002 National Medal of Arts. square coffee table: 23.5" w | 23.5" d | 17" h. • Verpan Fun 2DA Ceiling Light
    design55online.co.uk
Sexy sequined dress meets disco ball, the Fun series of lamps are the brainchild of Verner Panton – the most influential Danish designer of the twentieth century. Panton’s radical, revolutionary products epitomised the sixties – this one is from 1964 – but they have never gone out of production and have recently enjoyed something of a revival, championed by the post-modernists. The Verpan Fun 2DA light is a more compact version of the Fun 1DA. Constructed from the same top quality materials, it comprises two concentric chrome hoops supporting varying lengths of cascading metal discs which are joined with secure metal rings. It is entirely supported by a tasteful black fabric cord. The Fun 2DA looks sensational switched off, but when it is turned on the warm bulb (which is completely hidden by the lamp) draws air through the draped lengths of metal discs, causing them to oscillate. The movement generates random pulses of light and a relaxing tinkling sound as the discs brush against one another. Cheap imitations abound – avoid them. They employ Nylon wire to join plastic discs, hang poorly and require constant disentangling. Dimensions: Diameter: 27 cm. Height: 43 cm. Cord: 240 cm. Bulb: E27 (E26) max. 60 W.

  • Louis Poulsen Ph Artichoke Pendant Lamp
    hivemodern.com
Design Poul Henningsen, 1958. Spun aluminum, steel. Made in Denmark by Louis Poulsen. The PH Artichoke is considered to be a classical masterpiece. It was designed by Poul Henningsen more than 40 years ago. The structure is made of twelve steel arches. On this structure PH (Poul Henningsen) placed 72 copper "leaves" in twelve circular rows with six blades in each row. Because each row is staggered from the previous, all 72 leaves are able to "cover for each other". This design allows viewing the fixture from any angle without being able to see the light source located in the center of the PH Artichoke. The original PH Artichokes were developed for a restaurant in Copenhagen called the Langelinie Pavilion, and they are still hanging there today. Poul Henningsen was Born in Copenhagen to the famous Danish actress Agnes Henningsen. He never graduated as an architect but started practicing traditional functionalistic architecture, which led to a focus mainly on lighting which is what he is most famous for. His field of occupation also included areas of writing and. At the beginning of WWII, like other creatives, he was forced to flee Denmark during the German occupation but soon became a vital part of the Danish colony of artists living in Sweden. His lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting began in 1925 and lasted until his death. To this day, Louis Poulsen Lighting still benefits from his genius. Poul Henningsen's pioneering work concerning the relations between light structures, shadows, glare, and color reproduction-compared to man's need for light remains the foundation of the lighting theories still practiced by Louis Poulsen Lighting. 18.9" dia. | 18.4" h | requires 1x200W max A-23 CL medium. 18.9" dia.
