Artist: Andy Warhol (After) About The Poster: This exhibition poster was published in 1986 by the Galerie Lavignes on the occasion of a Warhol exhibition devoted to the Statue of Liberty. As Warhol died the following year, this is one of the last posters that he participated in the production of ... raising its value and collectability. About the Artist: Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 - February 22, 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. Warhol's artwork ranged in many forms of media that include drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, film, and music. From 1962 onwards, Warhol's paintings were made almost exclusively by screen-printing photographic images onto coloured backgrounds. These works were executed with the help of assistants in the studio that he called The Factory.

    "Indigo Wave" Handmade Print, 2016
Indigo Wave was created in 2016 and is a monotype original print in ink on watercolor paper that measures 8 1/2 x 11 inches. From the artist, "My New Series of Ocean Inspired Monotype Prints". I spent a lot of time being immersed in oceanic life, taking in countless sunsets, noticing low tides leaving sand formations on the bayside, and then being swallowed up by the ocean at high tide. I dripped wet sand into castles, collected driftwood, and seaglass the ocean had formed into soft gems. Now a seaside Californian, I continue to find my muse in the ocean. The elements of color, paint, nature and emotion come together to create each piece. It is my hope that the work touches, inspires and heals. A Monotype is created by painting with ink on a glass surface and then transferring the picture onto a sheet of paper by pressing. This gives the final picture the imprint effect, however only one print can be produced from each process. So the monotype is as unique as an original drawing. This particular work was created with water and ink on a gel surface by dripping and molding the image and experience of the sea. I used ColdPress Watercolor (25% cotton acid-free) paper made in Italy. When pressing the paper to the surface it absorbs the colors to reveal a unique print.

The kora is a string instrument similar to the guitar used primarily by people of the northern region of Ghana. Here a man is portrayed with his harmonic muse dressed in traditional batik clothing and silhouetted in black ink. He suggests an intoxicating melody - one that has traveled long distances to inspire with sweet resonance. A musical vision to display in the home. Yeboah explains for us his process First and foremost I assemble my working tools after which I sketch images on the calico cloth. With the sketches done I sprinkle red and green oil paints on the calico cloth to give it a simple colorful background. I then cut out particular places I intend to replace with batik which are later glued together. Accented in drawing ink. Arrives framed in tweneboa wood.

"Whitecap" - Ink on Mulberry Paper, 2016
Whitecap is a Monotype original print, created in 2016 in ink on Mulberry paper that measures 8 1/2 " x 11". From the artist, "I spent a lot of time being immersed in oceanic life, taking in countless sunsets, noticing low tides leaving sand formations on the bayside, and then being swallowed up by the ocean at high tide. Monotype is created by painting with ink on a glass surface and then transferring the picture onto a sheet of paper by pressing. This gives the final picture the imprint effect, however only one print can be produced from each process. So the monotype is as unique as an original drawing. This particular work was created with water and ink on a gel surface by dripping and molding the image and experience of the sea. I used Bleached Mulberry Fiber paper which is delicate and refined. When pressing the paper to the surface it absorbs the colors to reveal a unique print. Also a disclosure that the delicacy of Mulberry paper and absorption of ink creates a waviness to paper. However, when framed or mounted it will flatten.

    "Calm Sky" Original Handmade Print
"Calm Sky" is a Monotype original print, created in 2016 in ink on Mulberry paper that measures 8 1/2 " x 11". From the artist, "I spent a lot of time being immersed in oceanic life, taking in countless sunsets, noticing low tides leaving sand formations on the bayside, and then being swallowed up by the ocean at high tide. I dripped wet sand into castles, collected driftwood, and seaglass the ocean had formed into soft gems. Now a seaside Californian, I continue to find my muse in the ocean." The elements of color, paint, nature and emotion come together to create each piece. It is my hope that the work touches, inspires and heals.

My studio practice encompasses prints (aquatints, monotypes, linoleum cuts), drawings (an amalgam of cut paper, including repurposed prints, and various drawing media) and most recently, books. My invented architecture, distilled from my urban environs, begins as thumbnails in a notebook, either remembered or photographed, altered or fabricated. Sifting through these suggestions, I choose which to develop into finished work. Exploring the boundaries between representation and abstraction, form and content engage in dialogue becoming each other’s referent. Images entice combining strong composition with subtle color, tonality and texture, but evoke a spare unpeopled world of daunting structures absent any ingress and egress.

    chairish.com
    1960s French Horse Race, Lithograph
This quirky lithograph, which we believe to have been produced in the 1960s, features a dynamic horse racing scene. The marker drawing style of the print is explained by the fact that it is a maquette, or the rough draft of an unfinished poster. More than a sketch or simple outline, it specifies the specific colour shades - and their location in the design - needed for the final product. According to Wikipedia, "[Maquettes are] used to visualize and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full-scale product. It is the analogue of the painter's cartoon, modello, oil sketch or drawn sketch." The overlapping, multicoloured words in the lower right-hand corner of the print are the different colours used throughout the image. They include rouge (red), violet, emer (short for emerald), olive, etc. While not quite pointillism - an artistic movement which relies on the viewer's eyes and mind to blend the colour spots into a fuller range of tones - this poster applies the same technique to create a bright print by using contrasting colours. That is why pinks and violets are found amongst the greens, purples in the browns, etc. They help bring out the darker colours to paint a more vivid picture! Linen backed and in excellent condition. Please note that all of our posters are vintage, non-reproduction works of art.

From the artist: I spent a lot of time being immersed in oceanic life, taking in countless sunsets, noticing low tides leaving sand formations on the bayside, and then being swallowed up by the ocean at high tide. I used Bleached Mulberry Fiber paper which is delicate and refined. When pressing the paper to the surface it absorbs the colors to reveal a unique print. Also a disclosure that the delicacy of Mulberry paper and absorption of ink can create a waviness to paper. However, when framed or mounted it will flatten.

From an early age, Etienne Marie Lucien (also known as Le Rallic) (1891–1968) was passionate about drawing. As a minor, he moved to Paris to pursue his dreams and develop his skills in such recognized and respected magazines as Le Rire, Le Petit Illustre Amusant, etc. Gustave Blanchot (also known as Gus Bofa), a fellow young aspiring artist, helped Le Rallic discover his artist's name and create his signature. In 1912, he left his pencil and paper to enroll in the military, joining The Cavalry School in Saumur. It was there that he discovered his love of horses, an animal which would figure prominently in his post-war works (the earliest ones being drawings of horses for army publications). It is said that his admiration and respect for the noble beast translated into his drawings of them, which are often highly detailed, dynamic, colorful images. This set of two horizontal pochoirs (a stencil technique) are in excellent condition. Unlined, they are beautifully colored action-packed scenes which would look beautiful framed.

    Vintage MCM Klee Abstract Lithograph
This lithograph (offset) depicts an abstract image created by the modernist master Paul Klee (Switzerland/Germany 1879-1940 Listed) in the early-mid 20th century. The print is presented in a passepartout (paper mat). The print may be removed and re-matted at your option. Printed on one side only. Dimensions: 10.25"x11.75" print only; 11.5"x12.75" matted. Klee was the second child of Hans Klee, a German music teacher, and a Swiss mother. His training as a painter began in 1898 when he studied drawing and painting in Munich for three years. By 1911, he had returned to that city, where he became involved with the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), founded by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc in 1911. Klee and Kandinsky became lifelong friends, and the support of the older painter provided much-needed encouragement. Until then, Klee had worked in relative isolation, experimenting with various styles and media, such as making caricatures and Symbolist drawings, and later producing small works on paper mainly in black and white. Always preoccupied with the ring of words, titles played a major part in his work. Whether ironic, poetic, irreverent, deadpan, flippant, or—near the end of his life—melancholic, his titles set up the perspectives from which he wanted the works to be seen. From 1931 to December 1933, Klee taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf. When the National Socialists declared his art "degenerate" in 1933, Klee returned to his native Bern. Personal hardship and the increasing gravity of the political situation in Europe are reflected in the somber tone of his late work.

  • 1979 French Poster, Steinberg Galerie Maeght

1979 French Poster, Steinberg Galerie Maeght
Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) was one of America’s most beloved artists, renowned for the covers and drawings that appeared in The New Yorker for nearly six decades and for the drawings, paintings, prints, collages, and sculptures exhibited internationally in galleries and museums. Steinberg’s art, equally at home on magazine pages and gallery walls, cannot be confined to a single category or movement. He was a modernist without portfolio, constantly crossing boundaries into uncharted visual territory. In View of the World from 9th Avenue, his famous 1976 New Yorker cover, a map delineates not real space but the mental geography of Manhattanites. In other Steinbergian transitions, fingerprints become mug shots or landscapes; graph or ledger paper doubles as the facade of an office building; words, numbers, and punctuation marks come to life as messengers of doubt, fear, or exuberance; sheet music lines glide into violin strings, record grooves, the grain of a wood table, and the smile of a cat. Through such shifts of meaning from one passage to the next, Steinberg's line comments on its own transformative nature. In a deceptively simple 1948 drawing, an artist (Steinberg himself) traces a large spiral. But as the spiral moves downward, it metamorphoses into a left foot, then a right foot, then the profile of a body, until finally reaching the hand holding the pen that draws the line. This emblem of a draftsman in the act of generating himself and his line epitomizes a fundamental principle of Saul Steinberg’s work: his art is about the ways artists make art. Steinberg did not represent what he saw; rather, he depicted people, places, and even numbers or words in styles borrowed from other art, high and low, past and present. In his pictorial imagination, the very artifice of style, of images already processed through art, became the means to explore social and political systems, human foibles, geography, architecture, language and, of course, art itself. (http://www.saulsteinbergfoundation.org/life_work.html) Poster was printed by Maeght, one of the foremost Parisian printers of the time. Piece is in excellent condition, unlined, and recently purchased from a private collection in Europe.

  • Vintage Klee Mid 20th C. Abstract Lithograph

Vintage Klee Mid 20th C. Abstract Lithograph
