Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (Louise Dorothea Pauline Charlotte Fredericka Auguste; 21 December 1800 – 30 August 1831) was the wife of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the mother of Duke Ernst II and Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.

Princess Louise was the only daughter of Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and his first wife Louise Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, daughter of Frederick Francis I, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (her namesake).

On 31 July 1817 in Gotha, sixteen-year old Louise married her thirty-three year old kinsman Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld after he failed to win the hand of a Russian grand duchess. Louise was considered "young, clever, and beautiful".

They had two children: Ernst, who inherited his father's lands and titles, and Albert, who was later the husband of Queen Victoria.

The marriage was unhappy because of Ernst's infidelities and the couple separated in 1824. St. Wendel, in the Principality of Lichtenberg, was assigned as her new residence and Louise was forced to leave her two sons behind. Biographer Lytton Strachey noted in 1921: "The ducal court was not noted for the strictness of its morals; the Duke was a man of gallantry, and it was rumored that the Duchess followed her husband's example. There were scandals: one of the Court Chamberlains, a charming and cultivated man of Jewish extraction, was talked of; at last there was a separation, followed by a divorce."

On 31 March 1826 their marriage was officially dissolved. Seven months later, on 18 October 1826, Louise secretly married in St. Wendel her former lover, the Baron Alexander von Hanstein (later created Count of Pölzig and Beiersdrof). In her previous marriage, she had taken great interest in the social life of the principality and was revered as its Landesmutter (literally, "mother of the region"). Nevertheless, this happy life ended in February 1831, when her secret marriage to von Hanstein was discovered and she lost her children permanently.

Louise died of cancer on 30 August 1831, when she was only 30 years old. Years after her death, Queen Victoria described Louise in a 1864 memorandum: "The princess is described as having been very handsome, though very small; fair, with blue eyes; and Prince Albert is said to have been extremely like her".

Victorian~Vintage Quintessence

Victorian~Vintage Quintessence

Our beautiful logo was created by Ellen Hilart. She is such a fabulous artist both in real life and on Polyvore. Thank you Ellen.

There are several Victorian~Vintage groups on Polyvore. I wanted to create one that is the essence of them all. Quintessence means the most pure essence or most perfect embodiment of a thing or being. This group will be anything pertaining to the late 1800's to the 1930's. This will comprise The Victorian Era, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Deco and very early Vintage. I want this group to be the best on Polyvore for sets that will relate to the Victorian~Vintage era. I want to see sets that encompass life, love, memories, family, children, Victorian portraits, etc of this magnificent era. I will accept fashion sets, however they must have some form of art in them and must be either Victorian or Vintage. I will be glad to answer any questions, and provide any guidance along the way. This should be a wonderful group and I plan on keeping it fun too.

The NEW Gallery

The NEW Gallery

Welcome to The NEW Gallery!
This group was inspired by the original Gallery which was run by SylviaAst and Su Zany http://www.polyvore.com/gallery/group.show?id=82286
Unfortunately, this group has closed, but we shared the idea to open a NEW Gallery where every member can have a personal Polyvore art show!

This group offers wonderful weekly Art Exhibitions showcasing ONE MEMBER’s sets at a time in the format of a contest. Everyone is welcome to submit art sets to the group, but, please be respectful and do not enter them into another person’s Art Show / contest (banishment from group and no Show of your own is the consequence). Please let the featured artist know how much you enjoyed their show and don’t forget to vote for your 12 favorites each week!

We will invite group members and other Polyvore artists to feature their absolute best work in a showcase of their ART, FASHION or INTERIOR DESIGN sets for a week. If you would like to have your very own Art Exhibition, please let the moderator know.

------------ For those interested in having an Art Show at the NEW Gallery ------------

Once we have acknowledged that you are interested in being showcased, the next step is to send us a short biography (bio) AND ALSO a title for your exhibition. It's your show, select something that you believe represents your art!

It will be published when your Art Show is set up. Share anything that you want the Polyvore family to know about you when they view your art. Polyvore now limits the space for your bio to 300 spaces or about 55 words, so it must be short.

The next step is for you to send us one http: link for a set that you wish to have published with your bio - the POSTER of the contest.

After receiving your bio and http: link, we will give you the dates of the week that your Art Show will be held. On the beginning date of your Exhibition, we will set up a contest with Your Name, bio and link---this is Your Art Show! During the first 3 days of your Art Show / contest, you submit your fabulous creations. You get to choose what we will see!

Submit A MAXIMUM OF 45 YOUR SETS.

In the case when someone has accidentally submitted their sets to your Art Show, let one of the moderators know and we will try to remove their sets.

The last 4 days of your Art Show is for everyone to browse through your Exhibit and vote on their favorite 12 sets.

No matter what people vote for—You win!
