Eero Saarinen did not, in fact, invent the pedestal table, but we might be forgiven for thinking he did. The Saatinen Tulip Dining Table was a revolutionary design, in part, because it stood in such stark contrast to the standard pedestal table designed before Saarinen's Tulip collection for Knoll entered the design scene in 1957. “The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs,” he told Time magazine in 1956. And so he did, with a base said to be inspired by "a drop of high viscosity liquid." Intrigued by the possibilities in emerging technologies like molded plywood and fiberglass, Saarinen, a Finn, was also predisposed to the Nordic design sensibilities of simplicity and rationality. Half a century later, it's that clarity of vision that elevates Saarinen Tulip Table from merely beautiful to full-fledged classic. Features: The Eero Saarinen Collection. Designed by Eero Saarinen 1957. Tabletop features beveled edge. Top attaches to base with threaded rod. Tabletops available in a wide range of laminates, woods, marbles and granites. Base is heavy molded cast aluminum available with white, black or platinum paint. GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified. This product is available in more colors and finishes.
