DIY pumpkin planters. I LOVE mums in the fall and I love pumpkins...what better than to combine the two! Also, I have lots of little critters that love to eat my pumpkins which is why I have stopped carving the faces and begun just using decorations. To begin....
Make sure that the overall size of each pumpkin will fit the container of your mums. Once you have determined it will fit, then carve the top and inside of each pumpkin. If your pumpkin won't stay upright, cut off a bottom section of the pumpkin to make it flat. Don't worry about carving a face because we are going to put costumes on our pumpkins!
Around the opening and between the container and the pumpkin insert hay, leaves or grass for hair. If it is not secure, you can use string or tape wound around the container to hold the "hair" in place. It's usually easier to pull the container of flowers out, and then tie/or tape the "hair". Re-insert once completed. Also, if I am using hay for hair, I can always give it a trim if it is too long.
For faces, select various old items around the house...an old pair of glasses, buttons, old earrings, hats, etc. Also, you can use permanent magic markers or paint (wait for it to dry before proceeding).
For the hats, I usually get a stick (I can usually find them in my yard) and push it into the flowers. It should be long enough to hold the hat without crushing the flowers. You can use a staple gun to secure the hat to the stick.
Eyeglasses I usually make a slit for each earpiece and slide into the pumpkin.
Earrings (if they are post earrings) you can just push into the pumpkin (like a tack).
Note: You don't have to use mums for every pumpkin. For the cowboy pumpkin, I just showed a large hat. You don't have to carve this pumpkin at all. Just insert a stick into the pumpkin, and secure using a staple gun. The hair can also be stapled directly to the pumpkin (under the hat).
Hope you try this, and let me know in the comments section! Hugs to all, and Happy Halloween!
PS - You can water the flowers right in the pumpkin, too!
