This is the 'Everyday French Cooking' recipe box. This one-of-a-kind, handcrafted basswood box has been formed around a vintage French cookbook cover and spine. There's a portal for a smart phone charger cord at the bottom of the box. You can place your phone inside the box and charge it while cooking, avoiding splatters and water damage; the phone remains protected and even close enough to answer. It's also offers a great place to store your phone while you're eating - better for both your digestion and for conversation with your dining partners. Inside the box, there's also plenty of space to store recipes, notes-to-self, jeweled bottle openers and pate knife (as shown) plus your phone or phones. No more looking around - "where did I put my phone?" This book by famed French chef Henri-Paul Pellaprat was published in 1968. Pellaprat was one of the foremost 20th Century French chefs teaching at Le Cordon Bleu Cooking School in Paris . Perhaps Julia Child was one of his students, as Simone Beck was. Pellaprat wrote a comprehensive French cookbook that came out decades before the Child-Beck French cookbooks. He might have been a strong influencer! For one reason or another (including the slightly distressed cover) this book turned out to be a better box than a cooking reference. So it's been repurposed. There's only one of these in the Universe - and it's both useful and ornamental! As the saying goes, you can't tell a box by its cover.
