  • Vitra Verner Panton Cone Chair
    hivemodern.com
Design Verner Panton, 1958. Shell with upholstery and seat cushion, brushed stainless steel base. Made in Germany by Vitra. "Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colors. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting." -Verner Panton. In the mid-1950's, Verner panton converted a Volkswagen bus into a mobile studio and travelled across Europe. In 1958 he returned to Denmark full of unconventional ideas... One of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. Defying gravity, the cone was both futuristic and shocking... So much so that when it was exhibited in a shop window in New York City police had to order its removal due to the traffic chaos its presence created. A comfortable club chair for everyday use, Vitra has faithfully re-issued this classic in close collaboration with the Panton estate. The Heart Cone Chair takes its name from its heart-shaped silhouette. Production notes: Glass-fibre reinforced shell with light upholstery and seat cushion. Tonus wool fabric cover in red, orange, black or blue. Brushed stainless steel crossed base. 32.25" H | 22.5" w | 24.25" d | seat: 19.25" h | 19.25" d.

Design Alvar Aalto, 1954. Hand-turned polished brass. Made in Finland by Artek. "God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is at least for me an abuse of paper." -Alvar Aalto. Architect Alvar Aalto also had a distinguished career as a lamp designer. Aalto's lamps often arose from individual construction project. Many models were further adapted and developed for serial production. Artek's production includes several original designs dating from 1937 to 1959. From pendant and ceiling fixtures to floor and table lamps, his lighting was minimal yet elegant while offering a timeless quality. These lamps make a versatile and lasting feature to any commercial or residential decor. Alvar Aalto was a highly talented architect and an eager spokesman for the international modernist movement. Aalto's designs were innovative and radical and became known for his experimental approach to bending wood, which greatly influenced American designers Charles & Ray Eames and Finnish-born Eero Saarinen. His style became known as humanist modernism. Alvar Aalto's dialogue with nature, architecture, design and the human being has become a living legacy. This more complex variation of Golden Bell A330S was designed for large building projects in the 1950s. It was first used in the teacher's canteen named "Lyhty", at the University of Jyväskylä.
