  • Ole Wanscher Colonial Footstool

Impossibly thin Danish oiled oak combines with handwoven cane and luxurious aniline leather in the Colonial Chair and Footstool (1949) – Ole Wanscher’s most famous and enduring design. Defying gravity through masterful construction, with a compelling material contrast, its name honors the Danish designer’s fascination with English furnishings from the 1700s. A slightly more conservative strand of Danish modern than we see from masters like Finn Juhl and Hans Wegner, Wanscher’s work reflects his scholarly nature: He served as professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture (his alma mater) from 1955 to 1973. Designed in 1949, the Colonial wasn’t put into production until the mid-1950s, when Wanscher stumbled on a collaboration with PJ Furniture through Mobilia magazine editor, Gunnar Bratvold. (Carl Hansen & Son acquired the right to produce the Colonial Chair and Footstool in 2012.) Wanscher gained a good deal of notoriety in Denmark in the ’50s and ’60s. In 1958, the Danish newspaper Politiken declared, “Owning a Wanscher chair is an adventure every day, and will be so even several hundred years from now, for this is how long it lasts.” Made in Denmark.

Reduced to the essentials, the Anderson Sling Chair and Ottoman are the essence of purist design. A collaboration between Slowood Studios and Hawkins New York, this collection is the marriage of function and form, as evidenced in its comfort and beautiful simplicity. The chair alone is a sculptural statement made in honest and straight forward materials. The ottoman works well as extra seating and is lightweight. Both pieces are handmade of welded iron and untanned natural leather. Please note that the chair may arrive much lighter in color than depicted in the images you see - This is due to the nature of the untanned leather, as it generally requires 4-8 weeks to darken depending on humidity and exposure to light.

  • Normann Copenhagen Circus Pouf
    shophorne.com
Circus is a pouf that has an exclusive, Scandinavian feel, created by the Danish designer, Simon Legald. The pouf is rounded in shape, with the clean, graphic lines characteristic of Scandinavian design. The versatile Circus pouf allows contradictions to meet in a design whose style is strict and minimalist, while at the same time having a soft and inviting expression. Circus draws inspiration from antique Moroccan leather poufs, whose focus is on handicraft, and it explores the design construction and plays with the details. The traditional patchwork patterns are replaced by a plain triangle motif, giving the pouf a contemporary look. Circus is a playful, yet at the same time sophisticated, addition to any furnishing. Simon Legald says: “I like to work in depth with the construction of a design in order to achieve optimal functionality. Circus is made from two different types of foam: hard foam to maintain the shape of the bottom part of the pouf and softer foam above to provide excellent sitting comfort”. Textiles are now truly regaining their place in interiors. There is a focus on mixes of materials, textures and unexpected uses. The Circus pouf is available in soft and luxurious closely woven velour in five saturated colors, adding depth and warmth to the decor. Circus is a multi-functional piece of furniture and can, for example, be used as an extension for your sofa, as a seat for a coffee table or as a decorative seat in the bedroom.

After being recruited by none other than Charles Eames to become director of design for the Herman Miller textile division in 1952, Alexander Girard was given the freedom to experiment with vibrant hues and patterns in his work. Girard created more than 300 textiles during his tenure there, which lasted into the 1970s. A testament to his prowess with playing colors off one another, his Color Wheel Ottoman (1967) comes in bold yet playful pinwheel colorways that coordinate with an array of interiors. Girard carefully proportioned it to serve equally well as a footrest, extra seat or coffee table. Its flexibility reflects one of his tenets: “Art is only art when it is synonymous with living.” This is the authentic Girard Color Wheel Ottoman by Herman Miller. Made in U.S.A.
