---------------------------

Thick thoughts drip like blood and the beat of a drum pounds impatiently in rhythm with the shallow breathing of the audience.
They're all lined up in chairs like toy soldiers in time out.
Children wearing big hats with face paint and stuffed animals.
Parents exhausted from lugging them around all day, their wallets a considerable amount less heavy than when they arrived.

Circuses are sick things, really.
People gathering to partake in rigged games and poke fun at men in mismatched clothing with big red noses and painted tear drops. Prodding at animals behind bars like mistreated criminals, lazy from the haze of the day.

Then there were sparklers when the sun set.
Twinkling of fairies stuck on a stick till they burned all their light out.

The people herd themselves into the big top. Weary from countless travels and being taken down then set up then taken down. Along with the people in it.

I go on between acrobatic acts.
Distract the rows and rows so they don't notice the small quarrels and mistrusts between the performers.

I can throw a knife from twenty yards, and hit the bullseye every time.
I can throw three at a dummy, and have them land thunk thunk thunk, head, heart, hand. Two to kill and one to disarm.
I can do more damage with a butter knife than the average man can with a machine gun.
But that is not what they want.

So instead, I do back flips.
I run around with elephants.
I throw knives, but they are at posters of silly things, things that make children laugh and adults applaud.

When everything is done, we all stand in various places inside, the ringleader will open up the barrier and allow the flood of bodies to enter and talk to the people they liked best.

A child approaches me. She giggles happily and pulls on her father's hand. He is young. Perhaps a little two young. Fresh lines of stress are visible on his forehead. A young woman floats behind him. She is see through, her long hair covering most of her face. A slow trickle of red from her forehead and corner of her mouth. Car crash, most likely. She moves around behind the man, clawing for the girl that must be her daughter.

She cannot reach. Most likely, the man has put up a mental barrier to keep the child content and away from ghosts. It's like Peter Pan, happy thoughts keep the ghouls away, while dreary thoughts call them forward.

This will be the most fun i've had all day.

"Hello." I say with a false smile.

"Hi!" She giggles, reaching forward with her pen and program.

"Did you enjoy the show?" I sign in scribbles, the girl won't tell the difference.

"Yes!"

"What was your favorite part?"

"Elephants!"

I smile and reach for a small stuffed elephant, and hand it to her. The man steps in then, eyeing me suspiciously. Not trusting a thirteen year old. Rightly so.

"How much?" He asks gruffly.

"Free of charge, sir." I shift my weight. Relief washes over his features. The ghostly woman is pushed back farther from the happiness of the girl. She turns to me and glares, as if to say 'aren't you supposed to be helping?' I smiled, it could be seen as directed at the man, but it wasn't.

The ghost points at a flower.

"And here," I say, plucking the flower from Lyra's stand next to me. "For your mother." I hand it to the girl. She grabs onto it with a sad expression.

"My mommy died last spring. She loved flowers. How'd you know?"

"Oh, I'm so sorry. Lucky guess."

"Don't worry about it." The man pulls the little girl away. A bit to late. The girl is filled with sad thoughts. You can tell by the dreary way her shoulders hang. The man cannot regain his footing quick enough, and the ghostly woman rushes past him and scoops her daughter into a hug, one that the girl goes on walking with out noticing.

I smile at the next person in line, who's conversation with me is cut off by the sound of squealing tires, a crash, and several screams. One belonging to a little girl, short quick, cut off. The other the sorrowful howl of a man.

Why, that didn't take very long at all.

Sometimes it can take as long as a few months before the ghosties get a good choke hold on their living companions. This was in fact, a new record. Ten whole minutes.

As everyone rushes about, seeing what happened, I applaud the woman, for making such quick work of it.

I'm bored here.

Maybe someone will come and whisk me away to cause turmoil elsewhere.

"What is your name?" The man before me asks.

I try to focus, but my eyes snap back into my normal vision. I can feel the energy of the dead floating behind him, but I cannot see it.

Whoever he was, he had his guard up.

"Lorelei." I mutter, upset with this stranger.

"Like the siren?"

"Yes sir, the one that brings people down into the black abyss."
