Miranda swirled her glass of merlot around and sniffed the aromatic scent that wafted from it before taking a small sip to taste it. A second later, she nodded her head pleasantly and signaled the seller to package her a bottle of the wine.
"Excellent choice," Charlotte said with a grin, approaching Miranda at her side. Miranda smiled in return and nodded her head.
"Indeed," she added, "This particular wine taste just like the ones back home." Miranda looked nostalgically at her glass, as if she were recalling a memory that was strictly her own.
Charlotte cocked her head quizzically to the side. "Where is home, by the way?" she inquired.
Miranda chuckled ever so lightly, brushing some of her chocolate brown curls back behind her ear. "Oh, everywhere and anywhere," she started. "But mostly Toussieu, in France. That was the last place I remember living with my mother. She passed shortly after that."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Charlotte said.
Miranda waved her hand in the air as if to brush it off. "Don't be," she stated.
"Didn't you spend some time in the Middle East, as well, Miranda?" Sabrina asked, walking up to the duo with a glass of wine in her own hand. She looked a little worse for wear, but Miranda smiled happily at her nonetheless and decided on not asking her 'what happened' out of courtesy to the girl.
Although she knew very well.
"I did," Miranda admitted. "When I was 16, I traveled from Beirut to Tehran and Ar-Raqqah and even spent some time Al-Hudaydah."
"Why would someone do that?" Charlotte quipped.
Miranda gave a lofty chuckle and shrugged. "Curiosity...adventure...boredom...and I had discovered that my father lived somewhere out there."
Charlotte and Sabrina seemed impressed; each nodded their head in intrigued as Miranda revealed more about her past.
"Did you find him? Your father?" Sabrina asked at last.
Miranda looked at her and pursed her lips together, as if thinking of the proper way to answer that.
"No," she said at last.
"Oh, well I'm--" Sabrina began, but the sudden ringing of a gun shot suddenly cut her off. She froze and Charlotte dropped to the ground, tugging Sabrina to duck down as well.
The two girls looked at Miranda, who had also dropped to her knees, but seemed a little more calmer than the other festival attendees, who were currently screaming in horror.
Charlotte's eyes widened as she looked at Miranda. "It's the Joker. He said this was his next target. We have to get out of here," she whispered as another gun shot rang out.
Miranda shook her head. "No. No it's not," she said stubbornly. "It's someone far worse."
If either of the girls had looked close enough, there would appear to be the faintest formation of a smile quickly dance across Miranda's lips.
Charlotte and Sabrina exchanged a look of worry then Sabrina glanced back at Miranda, but couldn't find her. Her eyes drifted farther down in front of her, where Miranda was swiftly walking away from the commotion.
"She has the right idea," Sabrina said, glancing at Charlotte. The two decided to quickly stand up and run, following the same path that Miranda took to disappear from.
Simultaneously, an echoing and monstrous voice of a man filled the area. It's low, booming and static sound shook the festival-goers to the core. He stood on a haphazardly constructed platform, flanked on all sides by what seemed to be 'henchmen' dressed in desert garb and various military accessories. The man who was speaking appeared--for a lack of words--brutal. He was strong, menacing and could easily strike fear into every on-looker.
"Good afternoon, Gothamites," the sinister voice began. "Fear not for I am Gotham's reckoning."
Someone, some identified person, was the first to speak as they whispered, "It's Bane!" Unfortunately, that person was immediately silenced by one of the monstrous man's henchmen.
And that was when all hell broke loose...
