A reader of my old blog emailed me to ask if I still have some photos I had posted a few years ago of Peacock Hill, the black house of the Catskills. Here’s the entire set, originally publishing in Budget Living (R.I.P.), October 2003. Artists Rob Pruitt and Jonathan Horowitz weren’t what Fleischmanns, N.Y., would call typical weekenders. In 2003, the pair bought a 17-room Edwardian mansion in the Jewish resort community, painted it black, and began to turn it into a highly stylized haunted house, inspired by the Addams Family. "We saw the house as a set for a story that we created and cast ourselves in, about an eccentric homosexual couple who live in a big black house on a hill," they said. The duo also planned its obsolescence: After commissioning friends to create a permanent collection that would belong, museumlike, to the house, they sold it. A book of their "extreme decorating" experiments is being compiled. Prepare to get your spook on. All photos by Roger Davies for Budget Living, 2003

  • Horatio Alger "The Telegraph Boy" 1909 Book
    chairish.com
Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899) was a prolific 19th-century American author, most famous for his novels following the adventures of bootblacks, newsboys, peddlers, buskers, and other impoverished children in their rise from humble backgrounds to lives of respectable middle-class security and comfort. His novels about boys who succeed under the tutelage of older mentors were hugely popular in their day. His sympathy for the working boys of the city, coupled with the moral values learned at home, were the basis of his many juvenile rags to riches novels illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream of wealth and success through hard work, courage, determination, and concern for others. This widely held view involves Alger's characters achieving extreme wealth and the subsequent remediation of their "old ghosts." This "The Telegraph Boy" book is in overall good condition. The inscription inside the front cover is dated 1909. It has a printed cloth cover and is 256 pages.

Peter Pan is the titular character and male protagonist in the 1953 film of the same name, and its 2002 sequel. The character's origin comes from J.M. Barrie's novel, Peter Pan, published in 1911. Peter travels from the enchanted isle of Never Land all the way to London just to hear Wendy Darling spin tales about him and his adventures. While his ego may seem inflated at times, even his arch-nemesis James Bartholomew Hook, Captain of the Jolly Roger ship, knows that Peter's no ordinary boy...
