"HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPENCER!" we all screamed. I laughed and gave Spencer a hug, then made my way to the dance floor.
"Hey gorgeous." I heard someone whisper in my ear. I turned around at grinned at Emmet, but there was one problem.
"Dimmick? What the hell are you doing?" i said trying to push him away. But he kept at it, grabbing my waist every time i pushed him away.
"I think weeee should hook-up." He slurred, his breath smelled like alcohal and i could tell he was totally wasted.
"You know im going out with Emmet- Stop, Dimmick STOP!" I pushed him one last time and he stumbled back drukenly, cursing as he tottered away. Jerk, i thought as he walked away. I needed some air. I turned around and saw Emmet.
"Hey," i remarked walking over. "I thought you weren't gonna come."
"I wasn't, but it's a good thing i did."
"What do you mean?" i asked confused.
"I saw you just now with Dimmick, you odn't have to pretend anymore Peyton, i get it." He threw a box down on the ground and walked into the trees smothered by darkness. A sick feeling came over me. I bent down and picked up the box. It was wrapped impeccably, with silky white ribbon over a smooth navy blue box. I didn't want to touch it, for fear of damaging its beauty. I walked to the edge of the forest where Emmet had ran in, where no one was around. I pulled the ribbon off softly and held it in my hand like a newborn baby, as i slid the cover off of the box. Inside there was a note. In Emmets sloping handwriting it read,
To peyton, you will always have the key to my heart. I know it sounds cheesy but i couldn't come up with anything else. I wanted to tell you that I think I'm falling in love with you. Love always, Emmet
A lump rose in my throat. A small necklace sat perched under the paper. One key, shining like glass, hung down from the delicate chain. Tears began to well in my eyes. As harmlessly as I could I rewrapped the gift and dashed into the woods.
"Emmet," i said feeling uneasy, "Emmet where are you?" I glanced around but all i could see was the black nightfall.
"Emmet," i screamed, but i heard no reply. ONly faint sounds from the party. Laughing people, and loud music. I started to walk away, but something caught my eye. The outline wasn't something like the other bushes and trees; it was more like a person. Slowly walking over, i laied my hand on his shoulder.
"Emmet," i whispered softly. He didn't say anything, just continued to drag his fingers though the dirt in random patterns. I sat down next to him.
"Dimmick and I are nothing, Emmet. Trust me, he was totally drunk and trying to hook-up with anyone.I don't like him at all. I would never do that to you." I tried my best to explain but he remained silent.
"Emmet," i said my voice breaking," i love you." He looked up at this, looking me straight in the eye.
"Really?" he asked. "I- I love you too." He leaned in and kissed me. Right there in the forest of the river lot, in the middle of the night, i finally felt at ease.
